Don-Jo EL-104-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does an extended lip strike like the Don-Jo EL-104 do that a standard strike plate doesn't?
An extended lip strike carries a longer lip than a standard strike, so the latch bolt rides across the lip and into the pocket instead of catching the frame edge. That matters when the door is set back from the frame face, when trim or a wide stop leaves a gap the latch has to cross, or when a retrofit shifted the door in the opening. The EL-104 measures 2-1/4 x 4 inches, and Don-Jo takes that 4 inch width from the center of the screw hole out to the end of the lip, so the usable lip projection past the screw line is what you are measuring against your frame. Measure from your existing screw centers to where the latch actually contacts before you order.
2) How do I measure to know if the EL-104's 4 inch lip is long enough for my door setback?
Read the 4 inch figure the way Don-Jo publishes it: from the center of the screw hole to the end of the lip, not overall plate length. So put a tape on your frame from the screw hole centerline out to the point the latch bolt needs to reach, and if that is 4 inches or less the EL-104 lip covers it. The plate itself is 2-1/4 inches in the other direction. Getting this backwards is the usual reason an extended lip strike arrives too short.
3) Do I need square or radius corners on my strike, and does the EL-104 come both ways?
Corner shape has to match the frame prep you already have. Hollow metal frames that were machined with a router leave rounded corners, so a square corner plate will not drop in without filing; a chiseled wood frame usually takes square. The EL-104 is offered with optional radius corners as well as the standard configuration, so pick based on what your existing cutout looks like, not on appearance.
4) Does the Don-Jo EL-104 work with a deadbolt as well as a latch?
No. The EL-104 has a single latch hole, so it accepts one bolt. If your door has a knob or lever latch plus a separate deadbolt above it, you need either two strikes or a two-hole (T-strike style) plate. Ordering the EL-104 for a double-bore opening leaves the deadbolt with nothing to throw into.
5) Can I swap the EL-104 in without redoing my frame prep?
Depends on your existing cutout. It is a 2-1/4 x 4 inch plate with one latch hole, and the 4 inches runs from the screw hole center to the lip end. If your current strike shares that screw hole spacing and hole size, it drops in and the extra lip simply extends further past the jamb. If your existing prep is a shorter standard 1-1/4 inch wide strike, expect to open the mortise or accept the lip overhanging. Pull the old plate and compare before you cut anything.
6) Can a Trimco 1260P be used in place of a Don-Jo EL-104 extended lip strike?
No - they solve different problems. The Don-Jo EL-104 is an extended lip strike for a standard commercial door frame, with a single latch hole and a lip that carries the latch past the frame face. The Trimco 1260P is a pipe adapter strike, made to let a latch strike against round pipe or tube rather than a flat frame. If the latch is landing on a conventional frame, the EL-104 is the strike; the 1260P is for the pipe-frame condition and will not sit in a flat frame prep.
7) Will the Don-Jo EL-104 strike hold up in a high traffic commercial entry?
It is built from 18-gauge (.050) steel and Don-Jo lists it as a commercial part, which is the gauge you want where a latch is being hit hundreds of times a day. Typical placements are office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, warehouse, multi-tenant residential, and municipal buildings. For a door taking abuse, the strike is usually the first thing to deform, so 18-gauge over a light residential strike is the difference worth paying for.
8) What finishes does the Don-Jo EL-104 extended lip strike come in?
Eight, and they cover the common commercial hardware finishes so the strike is not the odd part on the frame: 605 polished brass, 609 antique brass, 619 satin nickel, 620 antique nickel, 622 matte black, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and DU duronodic brown. If you are matching existing openings, 630 satin stainless is the one that pairs with most commercial levers and closers, and 622 matches black hardware packages.
9) What if the latch has to strike a round post or pipe instead of a flat frame?
A flat plate strike will not sit on a curved surface. The EL-104 is a flat lip strike for a conventional frame face; for a gate or a railing where the latch lands on pipe, the Trimco 1260P pipe adapter strike is built for that geometry and is sold as the strike only.
10) Is a tamper resistant strike kit an alternative to the Don-Jo EL-104 for a security-sensitive opening?
The Detex 92 Strike Kit ships with tamper resistant fasteners, so on an opening where the fixings themselves are a concern it addresses something the EL-104 does not - but it is a double door kit, so it only applies where the opening is a pair. The Don-Jo EL-104 gains its security from the extended lip design, which increases latch engagement over a standard lip strike, and from 18-gauge (.050) steel construction. On a single door in a frame, the EL-104 remains the applicable part.
11) I need to restrike a whole floor of doors. Is the EL-104 sold in bulk?
It ships in shelf packs of 10, which suits the way this part actually gets bought. Strikes get replaced a run at a time, not one at a time, and standardizing a floor or a building on one model and one finish means the next service call is a part off the shelf rather than a measuring trip.
