Stop only units (S function) are designed to limit the degree of door swing while providing a cushioned stop. These units are a good choice for use on labeled fire doors where hold open is prohibited.

Stop/Hold units (H function) function like stop only units with an added selective on/off hold open feature. An inconspicuous slot screw on the face of the track channel allows field engagement/disengagement of hold open. Stop/hold is recommended where non-labeled doors must be held in the open position.

Friction/Stop (F function) units provide a cushioned limiting stop and adjustable friction stay. The accessible screw on top of the slide shoe allows field adjustment of the friction. This option provides a method of holding non- labeled doors at multiple positions without readjustment. Available in 700/710 Series only.

1) Difference between DORMA 700 Series and 900 Series overhead stops?
Duty rating. The 700 Series, which the 703S belongs to, is the standard duty line of stops and holders. The 900 Series is the heavy duty line. Pick 700 for normal traffic openings, offices, and interior doors; step up to 900 where the door gets abused, gets thrown open hard, or catches wind load. One other split matters: the friction/stop (F) function is only offered in the 700/710 Series, not the 900.
2) Does the DORMA 703S hold the door open?
No. The 703S stops the door at the set point and cushions it, but it will not hold it there. For a door you need parked open, order the 703H equivalent (stop/hold), which adds an on/off hold open engaged in the field with a slot screw on the face of the track channel. If you'd rather have the door stay put at multiple positions instead of one fixed hold point, the F function gives a cushioned stop plus an adjustable friction stay, adjusted by a screw on top of the slide shoe. Both hold options are for non-labeled doors only.
3) I need a stop that holds the door open. Is the DORMA 703S the wrong unit?
Yes, for a hold open requirement the 703S is not the unit. The S in 703S is stop only, which limits the swing and cushions the stop but has no hold open, and that is exactly why it suits labeled fire doors where hold open is prohibited. Within the 700 Series the H function adds a selective on/off hold open engaged by a slot screw on the face of the track channel, and the F function adds an adjustable friction stay for holding a non-labeled door at multiple positions. Across brands, the Norton Rixson 7 Series Checkmate is a surface stop and holder with a hold open function, and the ABH 3300A and ABH 4000RA add adjustable opening control to a stop and holder.
4) The DORMA 703S is not rated for the traffic on our stairwell doors. What heavier overhead stop should I use instead?
The 703S is the standard duty 700 Series unit. For an opening that takes abuse, step up to a heavy duty surface overhead: the Glynn-Johnson 90 Series, the Sargent 590 in bronze construction, or the Norton Rixson 7 Series Checkmate, which is built for industrial duty and carries a Grade 1 rating. The Norton Rixson 9ADJ Checkmate is also heavy duty Grade 1 and gives an adjustable stop at 110 degrees. All four are surface applied like the 703S, so the door and frame prep stays on the face rather than moving into the door edge.
5) Our specification calls for a Grade 1 overhead stop. Which surface mount units carry that grade?
Among the surface applied overheads, the Sargent 1540 and the Sargent 590 carry Grade 1, as do the Norton Rixson 7 Series and 9ADJ Series Checkmate units and the Norton Rixson 10 Series Checkmate with slide track arm. If the drawing pairs Grade 1 with a heavy duty requirement, the Sargent 590, the Norton Rixson 7 and the Norton Rixson 9ADJ are all heavy duty; the Sargent 1540 is the medium duty Grade 1 option. All are surface applied on the door face, so the frame and door prep is the same family of work as a 700 Series surface unit.
6) Should I use an overhead door stop or just a wall or floor stop?
An overhead stop like the 703S mounts on the door and frame head and limits the swing there, so it's the answer when a wall stop or floor stop isn't workable: glass walls, wall finishes you can't drill, obstructions behind the door swing, or a floor stop that would be a trip hazard or a mopping problem. Separate stops and holders are the preferred method of limiting door swing where wall or floor stops are precluded. Where a wall stop will do the job, it's the simpler part.
7) What finish should I order to match my DORMA door closers?
For a painted match to sprayed DORMA closers, take one of the two-coat paint finishes: 689 aluminum painted, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black painted, or 695 dark bronze. The standard two-coat paint finish is what DORMA calls out to match sprayed closers. If you're matching plated trim instead, the 703S also comes plated: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 696 satin brass. Fifteen finishes total.
8) Is the DORMA 703S surface mounted or concealed?
Surface applied. The 703S track and arm mount on the face of the door and the underside of the frame head, so there's no mortising into the door or frame and it goes onto an existing opening without routing. If the specification calls for hardware you can't see, that's a concealed overhead stop instead, such as the ABH 4000 Series concealed mount unit.
9) What is the difference between the DORMA 703S and a concealed overhead stop like the ABH 4000?
The 703S is surface applied: the track and shoe mount on the face of the door and the bracket on the frame soffit, so it is visible and can go on an existing opening without machining the door edge. The ABH 4000 Series and the ABH 4000RA are concealed mount overhead stops and holders in medium duty construction, which means the track is mortised into the top edge of the door and the arm into the frame soffit. They are not interchangeable in the field - a door prepped for surface will not take a concealed unit without new machining, and the reverse leaves the old surface holes exposed.
10) Is a Norton Rixson Checkmate 10 Series a drop-in replacement for a DORMA 703S?
They are both surface applied overhead units, but they are not the same thing. The 703S is a standard duty 700 Series stop only. The Norton Rixson 10 Series Checkmate is a heavy duty Grade 1 surface stop/holder built around a slide track arm, so it is a heavier assembly with a hold function the stop only 703S does not have. Existing mounting holes will not line up between the two - treat it as a new application with new prep on the door face and frame soffit, and if the opening is a labeled fire door, confirm the hold function is permitted before you specify a holder in place of a stop only unit.
11) I am standardizing overhead stops across a portfolio of commercial buildings. How do the DORMA 703S and the Glynn-Johnson 450 line up?
Both are surface applied overhead units for commercial openings. The 703S is the standard duty 700 Series stop only, and it comes in fifteen finishes including 626 satin chrome, 630-class options such as 619 satin nickel, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 690 dark bronze and 689 aluminum painted, which makes matching an existing fleet of doors straightforward. The Glynn-Johnson 450 Series is the light to medium duty surface overhead in that maker's line. If a portion of the portfolio has heavier openings, the Glynn-Johnson 90 Series is the heavy duty surface unit, so a mixed standard can stay within one style of surface application across both traffic levels.
