Dormakaba J8 689 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What reveal will the Dorma J8 top jamb closer arm work with?
The Dorma J8 arm is built for top jamb mounting with a reveal of 0 to 8 inches, measured from the face of the door to the face of the jamb or soffit where the closer body sits. If your frame reveal falls anywhere in that range, this is the arm for the ED900 Series closer. Beyond 8 inches of reveal, a top jamb arm will not reach correctly and you need a different mounting approach.
2) Is the J8 arm for the push side or the pull side of the door?
Push side. The J8 is a top jamb arm, so the closer body mounts on the frame face above the door on the side the door swings away from, and the arm pushes the door closed. If your closer is mounted on the door leaf on the pull side (regular arm) or in the frame soffit with a track, this is not the right arm.
3) Will the Dorma J8 arm fit any door closer, or only the ED900?
It is an ED900 Series arm. Dorma closer arms are matched to the spindle and pinion of their own closer body, so the J8 should be ordered for an ED900 closer and not used as a universal replacement on another series or another manufacturer's closer.
4) My ED900 closer body is fine but the arm is bent. Do I have to replace the whole closer?
No. The J8 is sold on its own as a replacement arm for the ED900 Series, so a bent or damaged arm can be swapped without pulling the closer body off the frame. Order it in 689 anodized aluminum to match the existing unit, and keep the mounting to top jamb, push side with a 0 to 8 inch reveal.
5) Is this arm rated for a high-traffic commercial opening?
Yes. The J8 is classed heavy duty and commercial, so it is intended for entrances and corridor doors that cycle constantly, not light residential use. It is sold as a replacement part, so it is the component you order when the original arm on an ED900 is bent, worn at the elbow, or sheared after an impact.
6) Does the J8 arm have a hold-open feature?
The J8 is a standard non-hold-open push side arm for top jamb installation on the ED900. If the opening needs the door to stand open at a set degree, you need a hold-open arm variant rather than this one.
