Dormakaba 34023-04-01 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What exactly is the Dormakaba 34023-04-01, and is it the visible strike plate or the part behind it?
It's the mortise strike box, the pocket that sits inside the frame mortise and receives the latch and bolt. It is not the face plate you see on the frame. Dormakaba lists it as a replacement part for compatible mortise lock systems, supplied in a 606 Satin Brass finish.
2) What is the closest equivalent to the Dormakaba 34023-04-01 mortise strike box if the door uses a residential deadbolt instead of a mortise lock?
The Dormakaba 34023-04-01 is a mortise strike box for commercial mortise lock systems, so it is matched to the latch and bolt pocket of a mortise case. For a door running a tubular deadbolt, the Kwikset 81640 Strike Box and the Kwikset 81231-001 Metal Strike Dust Box are both deadbolt strike plate parts and are the pieces that sit behind a deadbolt strike rather than a mortise case.
3) Can a Deltana SP2753 strike plate be used in place of the Dormakaba 34023-04-01?
No. The Deltana SP2753 is a 2-3/4 inch by 1-1/4 inch steel deadbolt strike plate, meaning it is the visible face plate that mounts to the jamb for a deadbolt. The Dormakaba 34023-04-01 is a mortise strike box, the recessed pocket that receives the latch and bolt of a mortise lock case. They serve different parts of the opening and are not interchangeable.
4) If the bolt on my door is not lining up with the strike, is the Dormakaba 34023-04-01 the right fix?
The 34023-04-01 is a fixed-geometry mortise strike box, specification matched to Dormakaba mortise lock hardware, so it replaces a damaged or missing pocket rather than correcting alignment. For an opening where the bolt needs to be brought into line, the Kwikset 80318 Full Round Adjustable Strike and the Kwikset 81825 6 Way Adjustable Deadlatch are adjustable deadbolt strike parts built for that purpose on tubular hardware.
5) I'm standardizing lock parts across a school and a medical office building. Is this strike box the right MRO stock item?
Yes, if your mortise locks are Dormakaba. Model 34023-04-01 is the genuine Dormakaba strike box for compatible mortise lock systems and is specified for commercial use in offices, schools, healthcare, retail, industrial, multi-tenant residential, and government buildings. Stock it against the mortise lock series already hung on your doors, not as a universal strike.
6) What other strike options does ZenSupply carry if I'm not working with a Dormakaba mortise lock?
Several, by lock type. For an ASA (ANSI) frame prep there's the Codelocks ASA Strike Plate in stainless steel. For deadbolts, the Deltana SP2753 is a 2-3/4 by 1-1/4 inch steel deadbolt strike, the Emtek 83223 is a square-corner deadbolt strike plate, and Kwikset offers the 80318 Full Round Adjustable Strike and the 81825 6 Way Adjustable Deadlatch. None of those substitute for a mortise strike box.
7) My mortise lock latches but the bolt drags in the frame. Would replacing the strike box fix it?
It can. The strike box supplies the latch and bolt pocket geometry the mortise lock needs to throw cleanly; a crushed, corroded, or wrong-size box binds the bolt. Replacing with the matching Dormakaba 34023-04-01 restores the original pocket dimensions rather than forcing you to grind the frame.
8) Which strike parts suit commercial versus residential openings when standardizing a building?
The Dormakaba 34023-04-01 mortise strike box is a commercial replacement part intended for commercial mortise lock systems in offices, schools, healthcare and multi-tenant buildings. The Kwikset 81640 strike box, Kwikset 81231-001 dust box and Emtek 83223 standard deadbolt strike plate with square corners are deadbolt strike components typical of tubular deadbolt openings, so a mixed portfolio may need both types stocked.
