1) Will the DORMA 7303 door closer work on a left-hand door and a right-hand door, or do I have to order handing?
No handing to specify. The 7303 is non-handed, so the same closer goes on left- and right-hand openings. That is why it works well when you are stocking one part for a building full of doors swinging both ways. Mount it regular arm (pull side) or top jamb with the standard round form AR arm.
2) Can I adjust the spring power on the DORMA 7303, or is it a fixed size?
Fixed. The 7303 is a size 3 closer with a fixed spring size, so the closing power is set by the model you order, not by a screw on the body. Size 3 suits typical interior commercial doors of moderate width. If your openings vary, or you want one closer that covers a range of door widths, an adjustable-size unit is the better buy: the BEST HD7000 Series is medium duty Grade 1 with adjustable spring power, and the Sargent 1131 is a Grade 1 medium duty adjustable closer. What you get in exchange with the 7303 is a shorter install: nothing to size in the field.
3) Can I mount the DORMA 7303 parallel arm on the push side of the door?
Not as supplied. The 7303 ships with the round form AR arm for regular (pull side) and top jamb mounting. The series overall is described as non-handed for regular, top jamb, and parallel arm applications, but the arm packed with this closer covers regular and top jamb. If the door has to take the closer on the push side and you want one part number that does all three out of the box, a tri-pack closer is the cleaner order, such as the Arrow DCN314 with regular/parallel arm tri-pack or the Norton Rixson 1601P tri-mount Grade 1.
4) Does the DORMA 7303 closer meet ADA opening force requirements?
ADA compliant, yes. It is also ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 certified, UL and cUL listed, meets UL10C for positive pressure, and is CSFM approved. That combination is what a facility or institutional buyer normally needs to sign off a closer on a rated corridor opening.
5) What is the difference between the AO8P, ARP, and FH arms on the DORMA 7303?
Three different jobs. ARP is a round non-hold-open arm: the door closes every time, which is what you want on a rated or secured opening. AO8P is the round secured non-hold-open arm, the choice where the arm fasteners need to resist tampering, typical on restroom, stairwell, and public-corridor doors. FH is a friction hold open arm, which lets you park the door open at a set point for moving carts or stock, and is not appropriate on a fire door. All three come in the same six painted finishes.
6) Can I put the DORMA 7303 on a fire rated door?
The closer itself carries what a rated opening asks of it: UL and cUL listed, meets UL10C for positive pressure, CSFM approved, and ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1. Order the ARP or AO8P non-hold-open arm for that door. Do not specify the FH friction hold open arm on a fire door, since a hold open arm parks the leaf open and defeats the closing the rating depends on.
7) The door is heavier than a size 3 spring will handle. What surface closer should I use instead?
Move to a heavy duty body with adjustable spring power. 8) What is a direct Grade 1 medium duty surface closer alternative to the DORMA 7303?
The BEST HD7000 Series is the closest straight equivalent. Like the DORMA 7303, it is a Grade 1 surface mounted door closer rated medium duty, and it carries adjustable spring power with backcheck control. The difference that matters when you order is spring power: the 7303 is a fixed size 3, while the HD7000 lets you set spring power on site. On a run of interior doors that are all similar width, the fixed size 3 removes an adjustment step; on a mixed set of openings, an adjustable body covers more of them from one part number. Sargent's 1131 and 1331 are also Grade 1 medium duty surface closers if you are matching an existing Sargent facility standard.
9) I need parallel arm mounting on the push side. Does the DORMA 7303 do that, or should I pick a different closer?
The 7303 with the AR arm covers regular and top jamb mounting. If the opening requires the closer on the push side with a parallel arm, look at a tri-mount body that ships prepared for all three positions: the Dexter DCH1000, DCH4000, DCL2000 and DCM1000 Series are Grade 1 surface closers listed as tri mount for regular, parallel or top jamb mounting, and the DCH1000 comes with a full cover. The Norton Rixson 1601P and the Norton 8501A are Grade 1 tri-mount surface closers. Arrow's DCN314 and DCN325 are Grade 1 surface closers supplied as a regular and parallel arm tri-pack. This is the substitution to make when the frame stop depth or the door swing direction forces the closer onto the push side.
10) I want the door to stay open at a set point. Is the DORMA 7303 FH arm the same as a hold open closer from another brand?
The 7303 FH arm is a friction hold open arm, which holds the door by friction at the point you set. If you want a mechanical hold open arm instead, the Accentra 51 Series carries a tri-packed hold open arm with mounting options and sizes 1-6, and the Orca BHDC1958HO/PA is supplied as a tri-packed hold open arm with a parallel bracket. Both are hold open by arm design rather than by friction adjustment. If you need the door to pause on closing rather than stand open, that is delayed action, a different feature: the Orca BHDC1958DA/PA and BHDC2011DA/PA are delayed action closers with a regular arm and parallel bracket, and they are not a substitute for a hold open arm.
11) What looks like an alternative to the DORMA 7303 but will not work as a replacement closer?
Three things sit next to surface closers and are not one. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate for the DCN500 - a mounting accessory, not a closer body. The Stanley 327 and Stanley 341 are wardrobe pivots, hinge-side hardware for cabinet and wardrobe doors rather than anything that controls closing speed. And a Falcon SC91A is a real surface closer but it is Grade 3 light duty, so it does not stand in where a Grade 1 medium duty body like the 7303 was specified. If your spec calls for Grade 1, hold to a Grade 1 peer such as the Falcon SC81A, which is Grade 1 medium duty.
12) My spec sheet says Grade 1 barrier free. Does the DORMA 7303 meet it, or is there a closer built for that?
The 7303 is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and ADA compliant, so it answers a Grade 1 barrier free line on the drawing. If you are matching an existing Cal-Royal standard, the Cal-Royal 500S is a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back-check and the N900PBF in the 900 Door Closer Series is a Grade 1 barrier free hydraulic surface closer. 13) What screws come with the DORMA 7303, and will they work on a hollow metal frame?
Both wood and machine screws are packed with the closer, so it covers a wood door or a hollow metal door and frame without a separate fastener order. On hollow metal you are into the machine screws and the frame needs to be tapped or reinforced at the mounting points, same as any surface closer.
14) Which finish of the DORMA 7303 matches the closers already on my building's doors?
Six painted finishes cover most existing hardware schedules: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. 15) Will the DORMA 7303 slam in winter and drag in summer like my old closer?

If you want to stay with a cast or aluminum body at a comparable duty level, the Falcon SC81A is a medium duty Grade 1 cast aluminum closer and the SC61A is a light to medium duty Grade 1 cast aluminum closer. Body material is usually driven by the abuse level at the opening and by what the rest of the building already carries.
19) Is there a lighter duty closer than the DORMA 7303 for a low traffic interior door?
