Dormakaba 74679-000-01 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly is the Dormakaba 74679-000-01 drive shaft assembly?
It's the long version of the drive shaft assembly sold as a replacement part for Dormakaba commercial door hardware, ordered under part number 74679-000-01. It is the shaft that transfers turning motion through the door from the outside trim to the internal mechanism, not a complete lock, so you're buying the shaft assembly only and reusing the rest of the hardware already on the door.
2) Do I need the long or the short drive shaft for my Dormakaba pushbutton lock?
Part 74679-000-01 is the long drive shaft assembly, and drive shaft length is set by the thickness of your door and the trim it passes through. Measure or pull the existing shaft before ordering: if the shaft you removed is the shorter one, this is not the matching replacement and you want the short version instead. Swapping in the wrong length either bottoms out or leaves the spindle short of engagement.
3) Can I replace a broken drive shaft on a Simplex lock without buying a whole new lockset?
That's the point of this part. The 74679-000-01 is stocked as a service replacement, so a shaft that has twisted, worn, or sheared can be swapped out and the existing lock body, trim, and code programming stay in place. Simplex locks are mechanical and change codes at the door, so replacing the shaft does not affect your combination.
4) Is the 74679-000-01 drive shaft rated for commercial use or is it a residential part?
Commercial. Dormakaba lists the 74679-000-01 drive shaft assembly as commercial door hardware, which is what you'd expect on the high traffic office, institutional, and government openings the Simplex pushbutton locks are installed on.
5) Does ordering the 74679-000-01 give me any choice of finish or size?
No options to pick. The drive shaft assembly is sold as a single configuration under model 74679-000-01, the long version, so there is no finish, handing, or size selection to make on the order. It is an internal component and never shows on the face of the door.
