1) What does the Dormakaba 8820J conversion bracket actually do?
The 8820J is a mounting bracket that adapts an opening prepped for a Jackson overhead concealed closer so a Dormakaba RTS Series closer can be installed in its place. It is hardware only, a replacement part for the closer installation, not a closer itself. You still order the RTS closer, arm and any spindle or cover separately.
2) I am replacing an old Jackson concealed closer in an aluminum storefront door. Do I need this bracket?
If the replacement closer is a Dormakaba RTS Series unit going into a header that was originally prepped for Jackson, yes, the 8820J is the adapter that makes the RTS body land correctly in that existing cutout. If you are replacing a Jackson with another Jackson, or the header is already prepped for RTS, you do not need it.
3) Does the 8820J conversion bracket come with the RTS closer or the arm?
No. The 8820J is sold as the conversion bracket on its own. Order the RTS Series closer body, the arm or slide assembly and any spindle separately for the job.
4) Will this Dormakaba bracket work with a surface mounted door closer?
No. The 8820J is for overhead concealed RTS Series closers going into a header. A surface mounted closer mounts to the door face or frame face and uses its own shoe and bracket, so this conversion bracket has no application there.
5) Is the 8820J bracket rated for commercial door traffic?
It is a commercial door hardware part, catalogued with Dormakaba's door control components rather than a residential line. It goes into the same overhead concealed application as the RTS closer it supports, which is typical storefront and entrance duty.
