Dormakaba InSync Battery Operated ASM Mortise Lock, Utility Mortise, No Deadbolt, Common, Continental Lever, Left Hand, Satin Chrome

InSync Lock Series

InSync locks work together with SAM RF software to create a single system that manages both key and access control at perimeter entries, amenity and utility doors as well as apartment or bedroom doors. With the InSync system, administrators only need to program the locks once; the software continually manages critical informational changes such as access privileges and move ins/outs. This information is delivered automatically to each lock via the InSync key once the “New” version of the key is created and used in the locks. Only one key is required for use at multiple access points, creating a convenient and efficient “No Touring” user experience. InSync lock models accommodate virtually all door types and preparations, and common area/amenity applications. The locks feature contemporary finishes and lever options to complement today’s design trends.

  • Unit — Designed for apartment entry, offices, utility rooms, and more
  • Suite — Ideal for multiple leases per apartment, such as student housing
  • Common — Used for perimeter entries and amenity spaces
  • Entry — Used to make an InSync Unit lock behave like a hotel lock; the lock will always automatically re-lock behind a resident
  • Suite Egress — Used to make a Suite lock act like a Unit lock where the key or the thumbturn is used to manually re-lock the lock

SAM RF Software & Hardware: The Windows-based SAM RF software, the encoder (key-encoding device), and the handheld utility device for programming the locks are separate items:

DormaKaba R20470 SAM RF Emergency Lock Power Supply (ELPS)

DormaKaba R21220 SAM RF Encoder With Extra Memory – Power Cord NOT Included

DormaKaba R21190 SAM RF Utility Device, With Extra Memory, Battery Not Included

Product details

The InSync Access Control System has different configurations to accommodate various applications, from unit and suite to elevator and pool access.

InSync I and D Unit Locks

The I and D unit configurations provide operational functionality for individual entry doors. Rotation of the inside thumbturn or the inserted RFID key extends or retracts the 1" dead bolt locking or unlocking the door. In the locked position, only duplicate resident and authorized service keys can access the unit. Unit locks are programmed with one resident code (change key). Each key made with one resident code can have up to 64 unique identity codes.

InSync M and L Unit Locks

The M and L unit configurations provide true residential entry lock functionality. Each time the inside lever is rotated, the lock goes into a “toggled” condition which eliminates the possibility of lock outs. When the key is inserted into the lock after egress, the lock is placed back into a locked position. An audit trail is created and stored within the lock for each occurrence. The inside thumbturn, when turned, will toggle the lock between unlocked and locked. Multiple residents can have access to the same unit if needed. All residents are completely unique in the system and are tracked individually.

InSync I, D, M and L Suite Locks

The suite configuration allows ingress and egress to multiple residents who need to access individual unit doors located behind the suite door. A resident uses the InSync I and D suite locks just like a traditional door lock.  The resident throws the dead bolt using the interior thumbturn or rotating the key in the lock after ingress or egress to relock the door. M and L suite locks have no interior thumbturn and always remain in a locked position after ingress or egress. Suite locks can recognize up to 20 unique resident codes.

InSync RAC Common Area Access

InSync RAC and CP products are available as either standalone battery- operated door locks or hard-wired AC/DC electrically powered devices designed to work in conjunction with other electronic latching hardware.
RAC works in conjunction with remote access points including elevators, outdoor pools, roll-up garage doors, parking arms, electric strikes, magnets, and telephone entry systems.

Dormakaba RMB220C-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Dormakaba InSync RMB220C mortise lock work on a right hand door?
No. The RMB220C is built left hand and handing is not field reversible on it, so a right hand opening needs the right hand version of the same lock. Check the swing before ordering: stand outside the door, and if the hinges are on your right and the door swings away from you, that is right hand.
2) Does the InSync RMB220C battery mortise lock have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt on this one. It is the Common configuration utility mortise, latch only, which is what you want on a perimeter entry or amenity door that has to stay latched and let people out with a single motion on the lever. If the door needs a throwing deadbolt, an InSync Unit lock with the 1 inch automatic deadbolt is the configuration to specify instead.
3) Can the Dormakaba InSync mortise lock go on a fire rated door?
Yes. The InSync ASM mortise lock is UL certified for use on fire doors with a 20-minute or 3-hour rating. Match the rating on your door label to the version you order.
4) Does the InSync RMB220C work on its own, or do I need other equipment to program it?
The lock itself is standalone and battery powered, but you cannot commission it out of the box. Programming runs through the Windows-based SAM RF software plus the encoder that writes the RFID keys and the handheld utility device that talks to the locks. All three are sold separately. Budget for them on the first door, not the tenth, since one software instance and one encoder serve the whole property.
5) What other electronic mortise locks could I use instead of the Dormakaba InSync for an apartment or common area door?
Depends on how you want credentials handled. For RFID like the InSync, the TownSteel FME-2000 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty RFID mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Accentra NTM623-NR nexTouch Generation 3 is a Grade 1 mortise with a capacitive touchscreen keypad and cylinder override. If you would rather issue PIN codes than cards, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy is a Grade 1 keypad mortise for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. For a wireless system managed from a central platform, the Schlage LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating.
6) What is the difference between the InSync Common, Unit and Suite configurations?
Common, which is what the RMB220C is, is for perimeter entries and amenity spaces, the doors everyone with a valid key needs to pass through. Unit is for an individual apartment entry, office or utility room. Suite covers multiple leases behind one door, student housing being the usual case, and recognizes up to 20 unique resident codes. Entry makes a Unit lock re-lock automatically behind a resident, hotel style. Suite Egress makes a Suite lock re-lock only when the key or thumbturn is used. The configuration is set at order time, so match it to the door role.
7) What should I use instead of the InSync RMB220C if the opening has to run on building power rather than batteries?
The RMB220C runs on battery power at the door. Where the opening is wired, the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation, the Command Access ML190 series is a heavy duty motorized storeroom mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, and the Schlage L9092EU-T-03A is a heavy duty electric lock/unlock outside lever mortise lock, keyed outside, with request to exit, at 12/24VDC on 1-3/4 inch doors. Field selectable EL/EU on the ML190 lets you set fail secure or fail safe at install; the L9092EU carries the RX switch for tying into an access control panel.
8) What is a straight electronic mortise substitute for the Dormakaba InSync RMB220C on a common area or amenity door?
The RMB220C is a battery operated electronic mortise lock with a lever handle set up in the Common configuration for perimeter entries and amenity spaces. If you want another standalone electronic mortise lock rather than a wired one, the Accentra NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt and cylinder override, and the Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader in privacy function on doors 1-3/4 inch thick. The NTM623-NR matches the RMB220C in having no deadbolt; the CO-100 is credentialed at the door by keypad rather than by an RFID key carried between openings.
9) I need a keypad electronic mortise lock instead of one that uses an RFID key. What are the options?
The InSync RMB220C is credentialed with the InSync RFID key rather than a keypad. For code entry at the door, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 Trilogy electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes in classroom function for doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thick, and the DL2700CR is a Trilogy T2 Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with classroom function and weatherproof design over the same 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch range. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. Code entry means no credential to distribute or encode; the InSync key carries programming updates into the lock as it is used.
10) What electronic mortise lock should I look at instead if I need a wireless or networked lock rather than one programmed by key?
The InSync system delivers access changes to each lock through the InSync key once the new version of the key is created and used in the lock. If you want the lock talking to the head end directly, the Schlage LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile enabled deadbolt with LED, right hand, 3 hour fire rating, and the Alarm Lock DL1300NW is a Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock with keypad for Adams Rite deadlatches. The LEMD-GRW is handed right hand as listed, so confirm handing against your opening.
11) The RMB220C has no deadbolt. What mortise lock should I use if the opening needs one?
The RMB220C is a utility mortise configuration with no deadbolt. Where a deadbolt is required, the Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad on doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thick, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The DL4500 is a deadbolt only, so pair it with a latch if the door also needs one; the 7925 combines latch and deadbolt in one lock body.
12) The InSync RMB220C is left hand. What mortise locks are field reversible or non-handed?
The RMB220C is supplied left hand. If you are buying for stock or do not know the handing at order time, the BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty public entrance mortise lock body with field reversible operation, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series mortise lock is listed with no handing. Field reversible means the latch is turned in the field, so one part number covers both hands.
13) Can a Dormakaba InSync lock be installed on an exterior door in cold or hot climates?
It is approved indoor and outdoor, rated from -31 degrees F to 151 degrees F (-35 C to 66 C). That covers a northern-climate exterior amenity or perimeter door, which is exactly the opening the Common configuration is meant for.
14) What batteries does the InSync mortise lock take and how is it powered?
Four AA batteries per lock, no wiring to the door. For a dead-battery lockout there is a separate emergency lock power supply, the Dormakaba R20470 SAM RF ELPS, that jumps the lock from outside so a maintenance tech is not drilling a resident's door.
15) How many keys or credentials do residents need across a property with InSync locks?
One. The InSync RFID key works at multiple access points, and access changes, move-ins and move-outs are pushed by the SAM RF software into the key, which then carries them to each lock the next time it is used. That is the no-touring model: staff reprogram in software instead of walking the building. It is why a Common area lock like this one and the unit locks behind it are worth deploying as one system rather than mixing brands per door.
16) Are the levers on the InSync mortise lock ADA compliant?
Yes, the levers and thumbturns on the InSync M mortise models are ADA compliant. The RMB220C is specified with the Continental lever in satin chrome (626).
17) Is a mechanical Grade 1 mortise lockset a simpler alternative to the InSync RMB220C for a utility or storeroom door?
If the door does not need audit trail or credential management, a keyed mechanical mortise lockset covers the same opening with no electronics or batteries to maintain. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever from the 8800 Series, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch on the same door thickness. Storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times with key access; the NM8050 office/entrance function allows the outside lever to be left unlocked.
18) Which mortise products look like alternatives to the InSync RMB220C but will not lock an amenity door?
The RMB220C is a complete battery operated electronic mortise lock with a lever. Several mortise items in the same family are not locking devices at all: the Schlage L0170 is a half dummy trim, non-keyed Grade 1 mortise lever for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Emtek 3102 Memphis and 3104 Hamilton are dummy mortise entrance locksets, and the Schlage PM010 is a Grade 1 non-keyed passage latch mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. Dummy trim is pull-only with no latch, and passage function latches but never locks, so neither will secure a perimeter or amenity opening.
19) What RFID mortise locks compare with the InSync RMB220C for a facility standardizing on card credentials?
The InSync RMB220C reads the InSync RFID key, and one key works at multiple access points across the system. For RFID mortise hardware from other lines, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology on 1-3/4 inch doors, the FME-4000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID on the same door thickness, and the Schlage LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader. The FME-4000 adds intruder function, which locks the door from inside the room without opening it.
20) What electronic mortise alternatives to the InSync RMB220C carry a 3 hour fire rating for a rated opening?
The Schlage LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 3 hour fire rating, and the Schlage LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions, also with a 3 hour fire rating, on 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are electronic mortise locks like the RMB220C; the LEMD carries a proximity reader while the LEBMB is push button and mobile credentialed.
21) Does the Dormakaba InSync mortise lock keep an audit trail?
On the InSync M unit locks an audit trail is created and stored in the lock each time the inside lever is rotated and the lock toggles. For a property manager chasing who opened what, that record lives in the lock and comes back through the handheld utility device and SAM RF software.
22) Can I use a Sargent 130KB or 130W in place of the InSync RMB220C?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard mortise thumbturn from the 8200 Series and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate from the 7800 Series. Both are thumbturn trim pieces that mount to a mortise lock body, not locks themselves. The RMB220C is a complete battery operated electronic mortise lock with a Continental lever, so a thumbturn is at most an accessory alongside a lock body, never a replacement for one.
23) What is the closest match to the InSync RMB220C in satin chrome for matching existing hardware?
The RMB220C is supplied in 626 satin chrome. Among electronic mortise peers, the Schlage L9092EU-T-03A is specified in 626 as well, a heavy duty electric lock/unlock outside lever mortise lock with request to exit on 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset in satin stainless steel, and the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset, both of which read close to satin chrome but are a stainless finish rather than 626.
