WattStopper DT-305 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the WattStopper DT-305 occupancy sensor run on line voltage, or does it need a low-voltage power pack?
The DT-305 is a 24VDC sensor. It has no line-voltage switching built in, so it has to be fed from a low-voltage source, typically a power pack or the 24VDC bus of a building automation system, and the load is switched at that device rather than at the sensor. If you are replacing a self-contained line-voltage wall or ceiling sensor, budget for that power pack in the same order.
2) Where does the DT-305 mount, and will one cover a whole room?
It is a center-mount ceiling sensor with 360 degree coverage, so it is meant to go in the middle of the space and look out in all directions rather than in a corner or on a wall. That works for open offices, classrooms, and similar square or near-square rooms. For an L-shaped room, a corridor, or a space broken up by tall partitions or shelving, a single center-mount 360 unit will leave areas out of view and you are better off with additional sensors or a corridor-pattern head.
3) What does dual technology mean on the WattStopper DT-305, and why would I use it instead of a PIR-only sensor?
Dual technology means the sensor uses two detection methods together, passive infrared plus ultrasonic. PIR needs line of sight and motion across its field, so people working quietly at a desk or behind a partition can drop off it and the lights go out on them. Ultrasonic picks up minor motion and works around obstructions. The DT-305 adds a patented ultrasonic diffusion design that spreads the ultrasonic coverage over a wider area to cut blind spots. Use dual tech where false-off complaints matter, such as private offices, restrooms, and classrooms; PIR-only is fine for a warehouse aisle or storage room where movement is obvious.
4) Can a DT-305 sensor control HVAC or feed a BAS as well as lighting?
Yes, through the isolated relay option. That contact is separate from the lighting control path, so it can be run into a building automation system or an HVAC controller to drive setback on unoccupancy while the lights are handled on the low-voltage side. The isolated relay is an ordering option, so it has to be specified rather than assumed present on a standard unit.
5) Can the DT-305 be set so lights stay on manually, or so one technology holds and the other triggers?
There are eight occupancy logic options on the DT-305, which is how you set whether both technologies must agree to turn the lights on, whether either one alone can hold them on, and similar behaviors. That is the setting to reach for when a room is turning on from hallway traffic or going dark on someone sitting still. LED occupancy indicators on the unit show detection status while you are commissioning, so you can watch what the sensor is actually seeing instead of guessing from the lights.
6) How much of the ceiling does a WattStopper DT-305 take up, and how big is the hole or backing it needs?
The sensor body measures 5.0 by 4.0 by 2.0 inches and weighs 0.58 lb, with a total volume of 47.5 cubic inches. That is light enough to hang from a standard ceiling box or a lay-in tile with a support bracket, and small enough that it does not conflict with a typical 2x2 fixture layout. Worth checking the 2 inch dimension against your plenum clearance if you are mounting in hard lid.
7) How is the DT-305 wired in, and does it speed up rough-in on a large sensor job?
Wiring is through a plug terminal system rather than loose screw terminals, so the low-voltage conductors land in a connector that plugs into the sensor. On a job with dozens of heads, that lets an electrician pre-terminate at the ceiling and drop the sensors in later, and it makes swapping a failed unit a plug change rather than a rewire.
8) Does the WattStopper DT-305 have environmental documentation for a LEED or green building submittal?
A product environmental profile is published for the DT-305, which is the document a sustainability consultant or specifying engineer asks for on a green building submittal. The sensor is manufactured in China, which matters if your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement such as a Buy American clause on a government or federally funded job.
