B-LINE 4D21S-240HDG – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this strut channel OK to use outdoors or in a wet location?
Yes. The 4D21S-240HDG is hot-dipped galvanized steel, which is the finish specified for exterior runs, rooftops, parking structures, tunnels, wash-down areas and other corrosive or wet environments. Plain or pre-galvanized (electro-zinc) channel is the indoor, dry-location choice; hot-dip is the one you want where the steel sees weather.
2) Does the B-Line 4D21S come with any nuts, fittings or brackets?
No. The 4D21S-240HDG is the bare 240 in channel stick only. Spring nuts or channel nuts, end caps, splice plates, post bases, beam clamps, conduit clamps and anchors are all ordered separately. Match the fittings to the 2.12 in channel width and specify hot-dipped galvanized hardware if the run is outdoors, otherwise the fasteners will rust long before the channel does.
3) What is the exact part number to order this Eaton B-Line strut channel?
Order it as Eaton B-Line 4D21S-240HDG. Broken down: 4D21 is the 4Dimension channel profile, S is the slotted back, 240 is the 240 in length and HDG is the hot-dipped galvanized finish. Changing any one of those letters changes the part, so a quote or submittal should carry the full string.
4) Will 4D21 half-height channel fit where a standard 1-5/8 inch deep strut will not?
That is exactly what it is for. At 1.06 in high it is roughly half the depth of standard 1-5/8 in channel, so it drops into shallow ceiling plenums, furred walls and tight equipment enclosures where the deeper section will not clear. The trade-off is load capacity: the shallower section with 18 gauge steel carries less than a full-depth channel over the same span, so keep supports closer together.
5) Can I cut this 20 foot strut down to length on site?
Yes, 4D21 channel is cut to length in the field with a bandsaw, chop saw or portable band. One thing to plan for: cutting exposes bare steel at the ends, and on a hot-dipped galvanized part outdoors those cut ends need a cold galvanizing compound to keep the corrosion protection continuous. Indoors and dry, a cut end is not a concern.
