B-LINE 664-12CHQRC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What are the actual box dimensions of the Eaton B-Line 664-12CHQRC JIC enclosure?
The 12CHQRC enclosure measures 6 inches high, 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep. That is a small single-door box, so plan on it holding a compact relay, terminal block or sensor interface rather than a full control panel. It weighs 3.9 lb empty.
2) Is a NEMA 12 enclosure OK for a washdown or outdoor location?
No. NEMA 12 covers dust, falling dirt and dripping non-corrosive liquids in an indoor industrial space. It is not a hosedown or outdoor rating, so a wet process area or an exterior wall calls for a NEMA 4 or 4X box instead. The seamless poured in-place gasket on the 664-12CHQRC is what earns the 12 rating at the door.
3) Does this Eaton B-Line JIC box come with a back panel?
The 12CHQRC is supplied with panel mounting provisions, meaning the studs or brackets to accept a subpanel are in the box, but the subpanel itself is a separate order. If you are landing DIN rail or terminal strips, add the matching back panel to the order.
4) Will this enclosure satisfy an inspector on an industrial control panel build?
The 664-12CHQRC carries UL 508A, the standard for industrial control panels, which is the listing an AHJ looks for on a machine control or MRO panel enclosure. The NEMA 12 rating covers the environment side. Country of origin is the US.
5) How does the cover open and latch on the 664-12CHQRC?
Continuous piano hinge down one side with a pull-drawn catch on the door. The hinge is welded full length rather than pinned at two points, so the door stays in alignment against the gasket over repeated service access, and the catch is a quick-release pull, no tool and no key.
6) What gauge steel is this enclosure and what is the finish?
16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 grey. That is the standard industrial control grey, so it will match existing Eaton B-Line and most other control enclosures already on the wall. Painted carbon steel is fine indoors; a corrosive or chemical area wants stainless or a non-metallic box.
7) What is the correct part number to order for this 6 x 6 x 4 hinged B-Line box?
Order it as Eaton B-Line 664-12CHQRC. The 664 is the 6 x 6 x 4 size and 12CHQRC identifies the NEMA 12 continuous-hinge quick-release-catch enclosure type.
