B-LINE 1286 WPSC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the B-Line 1286 WPSC junction box be used outdoors?
Yes. The 1286 WPSC is a Type 3/3R enclosure, so it is built for outdoor use against rain, sleet and windblown dust. The screw cover seals against an oil-resistant gasket and the cover screws are gasketed as well, which is what gets it the rating. It is UL 50 listed.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 1286 WPSC enclosure?
It measures 12 inches high, 8 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The 6 inch depth is the number that usually decides the job, since it gives room for terminal blocks, small relays or a gutter run behind the cover. Mounting feet sit outside the box, so they add to the footprint on the wall but do not eat into interior space.
3) Does this B-Line enclosure come with knockouts or do I have to drill it?
WPSC screw cover enclosures ship with no holes. You punch conduit entries where you need them, and to hold the Type 3R rating you must use raintight hub fittings and keep entries on the sides or bottom rather than the top.
4) How do I mount the 1286 WPSC to a wall without breaking the seal?
It mounts on external feet, so all four fasteners land outside the enclosure body. Nothing penetrates the wall of the box and the gasketed seal stays intact. Surface mount only, on a wall, strut or backboard, not flush into finished drywall.
5) Is the screw cover style right for me, or should I look at a hinged door enclosure?
Screw cover suits a box you open rarely, a pull point, a splice, a set of terminal blocks you check once a year. The flanged cover comes off completely and you handle loose screws each time. If crews are in the box weekly, or it is mounted high or over equipment, a hinged and latched enclosure is the easier choice. For a sealed outdoor pull or splice point, the screw cover is the simpler and tighter option.
6) What gauge steel and finish is the B-Line 1286 WPSC box?
16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 grey. The whole unit weighs 8.1 lb. ANSI 61 grey is the standard industrial control finish, so it matches panelboards, disconnects and control cabinets already on most plant walls. Carbon steel means it is paintable and weldable but not a substitute for stainless in washdown or coastal salt exposure.
7) Is a Type 3 box good enough for a dusty interior area, or do I need NEMA 12?
The 1286 WPSC is described for both NEMA 3 and 12 service, so it handles falling dirt and circulating dust indoors as well as outdoor rain and sleet. Standardize on it if you have openings in both environments. What it is not rated for is hosedown or washdown, which needs a Type 4 or 4X enclosure.
