B-LINE 18188 RTHC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 18188 RTHC enclosure be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 18188 RTHC carries a NEMA 3R rating and includes a rain hood, so it is built for outdoor wall mounting where falling rain, sleet and ice are the concern. It is not a washdown or hosedown box, 3R does not cover direct water jets or dust-tight service. Body is 16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 grey.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 18188 RTHC junction box?
18 inches high, 18 inches wide and 8 inches deep. That 8 inch depth is what decides whether your gutter taps, terminal blocks or a small contactor will sit inside with the hinged door still closing. It weighs 20.7 lb empty, so a single installer can hang it, but anchor into studs or masonry, not drywall alone.
3) Does this Eaton B-Line 3R enclosure come with knockouts already, or do I have to punch my own?
The 18188 RTHC ships with 9 knockouts, so standard conduit entries are already provided. For a 3R installation keep your entries on the bottom or lower sides and use rain-tight fittings on anything on the top or upper surfaces, otherwise the 3R rating is defeated at the penetration.
4) How does the 18188 RTHC mount to a wall, and is mounting hardware built in?
Surface mount, using embossed thru holes in the back of the enclosure. Embossed holes keep the mounting fasteners standing the box slightly off the wall surface. You supply the anchors or lags to suit the wall, and be aware the holes are inside the enclosure, so the box must be open to fasten it.
5) Can this B-Line junction box be padlocked for a tenant or public area?
Yes, the 18188 RTHC has a padlock provision on the door, which is what property managers and facility crews usually need for boxes in corridors, rooftops, loading docks or anywhere unqualified people can reach. Padlock is not supplied.
6) Is the door on the RTHC hinged or a screw cover, and can it be taken off?
Both, in effect. It is a medium single door with a formed top hinge, so it swings open and stays with the box during service, and the cover is removable if you want it off entirely while pulling wire or landing a large bundle. Screw covers on a box this size are a two-hand job on a ladder, the hinge is the reason to pick this one.
7) Is the B-Line 18188 RTHC UL listed, and will it pass an inspection on a spec job?
It is built to UL 50, the standard covering enclosures for electrical equipment, and it is manufactured in the US. Between the UL 50 reference and the NEMA 3R rating it covers the usual submittal line for an outdoor surface junction or pull box. Confirm your drawing does not call for a 4 or 4X rating instead, as 3R will not satisfy those.
8) Will a painted steel 3R box hold up outdoors, or should I be specifying stainless?
The 18188 RTHC is 16 gauge carbon steel with a painted ANSI 61 grey finish, which is the standard choice for normal outdoor and industrial exposure. In coastal salt air, chemical exposure, or a washdown area, painted carbon steel is the wrong call and you want a stainless or non-metallic 4X enclosure instead.
9) Is the part number for the 18x18x8 B-Line hinged 3R box just 18188 RTHC?
Yes. The Eaton B-Line catalogue number is 18188 RTHC, where the digits read as 18 high, 18 wide, 8 deep and RTHC identifies the rain-tight hinged cover enclosure. Quote that number straight, there is no separate finish or size suffix to add.
