1) Can Crouse-Hinds RT compression couplings be used outdoors or in wet locations?
Yes. The RT series couplings are raintight compression fittings for EMT, so they hold up on exterior runs, rooftop conduit, and feeds into outdoor enclosures where a standard set-screw coupling would let water into the raceway. One limit to respect: they are approved for ordinary and non-hazardous locations only. If your area is classified, this is the wrong fitting and you need a fitting listed for that classification.
2) Will a Crouse-Hinds 660RT coupling work on rigid or IMC conduit?
No. These couplings are made for EMT only. Compression fittings grip the outside wall of thin-wall EMT; rigid and IMC are threaded conduit and need threaded couplings or a threaded-to-EMT transition fitting instead. Match the fitting to the raceway type before you order.
3) Compression or set-screw EMT coupling, which one do I need?
It comes down to whether water can reach the joint. Set-screw couplings are for dry indoor work only. A compression coupling like the RT series uses a gland nut and ring that squeezes down on the conduit wall, and the raintight construction is what lets it go on exposed and outdoor runs. If the conduit is inside a dry building, either will do the job and set-screw is faster to install. Outside, on a roof, in a damp basement, or anywhere an inspector will call it a wet location, use the compression raintight fitting.

Nine trade sizes, and the part number steps with the size: 660RT is 1/2 inch, 661RT is 3/4 inch, 662RT is 1 inch, 663RT is 1-1/4 inch, 664RT is 1-1/2 inch, 665RT is 2 inch, 666RT is 2-1/2 inch, 667RT is 3 inch, and 669RT is 4 inch. Note the jump at the top: there is no 668RT here, the 4 inch is 669RT.
5) Are Crouse-Hinds RT EMT couplings code compliant for commercial electrical work?
The RT couplings are built to NEC/CEC standards, which covers both US and Canadian jobs off the same part number. That matters on institutional and government work where the submittal has to show a code-compliant raceway system. The one condition on the approval is location: ordinary and non-hazardous areas.
6) Are these EMT couplings steel or die-cast zinc?
Steel. That is the difference worth knowing on a compression coupling, because die-cast zinc bodies are the ones that crack when the gland nut gets over-torqued or when the fitting takes a hit during construction. Steel also carries the ground path through the joint reliably, which is what you want when the EMT itself is your equipment grounding conductor.
7) Can I standardize one EMT coupling across a whole facility, from branch circuits to feeders?
You can. The RT compression coupling range runs from 1/2 inch all the way to 4 inch, so the same fitting family covers small branch-circuit runs and large feeder conduit, indoors and on exposed exterior work. For MRO stockrooms that means one line item family instead of separate indoor and outdoor coupling stock, since the raintight fitting is fine in dry ordinary locations too.
8) Can I use a Crouse-Hinds RT coupling to join two pieces of EMT of different trade sizes?
No. Each RT coupling is a single trade size on both ends, so a 663RT joins 1-1/4 inch EMT to 1-1/4 inch EMT and nothing else. To step between sizes you need a reducing fitting or a box or conduit body with the two sizes prepped, not a coupling.
9) Do I need any glue, thread sealant, or tools beyond a wrench to install a 662RT compression coupling?
No sealant and no threading. A compression coupling is supplied with its gland nuts and compression rings assembled, you cut and ream the EMT, push it in to the internal stop from each side, and tighten the nuts with a wrench. Two wrenches or a wrench and a pair of channel locks is the usual setup on the larger sizes like the 667RT 3 inch. Ream the cut ends properly, since a burr is what tears conductor insulation on the pull.
10) Will a raintight compression coupling work in a car wash, food plant, or other corrosive washdown area?
Careful here. Raintight covers rain and moisture exposure, and the approval is for ordinary and non-hazardous locations, which is a different thing from a corrosive or continuously wet-process environment. For washdown and chemically aggressive areas, specify a fitting rated for that environment rather than assuming the raintight steel coupling covers it.
