B-LINE 3MHCB1000R – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Eaton B-Line 3MHCB1000R main breaker be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 3MHCB1000R comes in a NEMA 3R enclosure, so it is rated for outdoor, rain-tight service on an exterior wall or meter stack location. It is a large piece of gear, measuring 61.4 in by 33.4 in by 14.5 in and weighing 160 lb, so plan the wall backing and rigging accordingly.
2) What voltage and system configuration is the 1000A 3MHCB1000R main breaker built for?
It is a 120/208V three-phase, four-wire main, so it suits a wye service feeding a multi-family or commercial modular metering stack. It is not a 277/480V device and it is not intended for single-phase three-wire residential service.
3) Does the 1000A Eaton main come with neutral lugs?
No. Neutral lugs are ordered separately as 1MCB1200NLK. Add that to the order or the neutral has nowhere to land at rough-in.
4) Can I use this 1000A main on an 800A residential modular metering stack?
Yes, but only as a center fed main. Eaton allows main devices rated above 800A on 800A residential modular stacks in the center fed arrangement only, so an end-fed layout is out.
5) What conductor size will the 1000A main breaker terminate?
Line terminations take four conductors per phase, #4/0 AWG through 500 kcmil each. Size your parallel runs to land in that window; anything larger per conductor won't fit the lug.
6) Will a 1000A main breaker section with 100 kAIC hold up on a high fault-current service?
The 3MHCB1000R is rated 1000A with a 100 kAIC interrupting rating, which covers most utility transformer fault duties on a 120/208V service. Confirm the available fault current from the utility letter against that 100 kAIC figure.
7) Is this Eaton main bottom fed or top fed?
Bottom feed. Service conductors enter from below, which is what you want when the lateral comes up from an underground pull section or trench rather than a weatherhead.
8) Is the bus in this B-Line main copper or aluminum?
Aluminum bus. If the project spec calls out copper bus throughout, this one won't meet it; check the electrical spec section before releasing the order.
9) Which breaker frame is used in the 3MHCB1000R main section?
It uses an Eaton NGH frame main circuit breaker at 1000A. That matters for trip unit and accessory ordering, since shunt trips, auxiliary contacts and spare trip units have to match the NGH frame.
