Cooper Wiring Devices WIU-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Cooper WIU-1 while-in-use cover stay closed with a cord plugged in?
That is what it is built for. The WIU-1 is a self-closing while-in-use cover, so the lid drops back down over the receptacle with a cord running out of it, keeping rain and debris off the device. The body has 3.25 inches of depth, which is what gives a plug and its cord room to sit under the closed lid rather than holding it open.
2) Will this Cooper cover fit a standard single-gang outdoor receptacle, and does it work with GFCI or duplex?
It is sized for a standard single-gang wallplate and comes with multiple cutout configurations, so it covers common single-gang device styles including duplex and decorator-style openings. It is a single-gang cover only, so a two-gang box needs a different cover.
3) Is the Cooper WIU-1 rated for wet locations or just damp?
The WIU-1 is rated for wet environmental conditions, which is the rating an exposed exterior receptacle needs when it will be used with something plugged in, such as a patio, deck, or landscape outlet. A damp-location flip-lid cover does not cover that case.
4) Can the Cooper WIU-1 weatherproof cover be mounted sideways on a horizontal outlet box?
Yes. The WIU-1 installs in either horizontal or vertical orientation, so a box set on its side is no problem. Pick the orientation that lets the cord exit downward, which is what keeps water running off rather than into the opening.
5) Does this cover mount to the surface over an existing outlet, or does it need a new box?
Surface mounting. The WIU-1 goes on over an existing single-gang outlet in place of the old wallplate, using the device's own mounting, so it is a straightforward swap on a receptacle that is already installed.
6) Is a metal or plastic in-use cover better for an exposed exterior wall?
The Cooper WIU-1 uses a molded polycarbonate body rather than die-cast metal. Polycarbonate resists cracking and weathering and will not corrode in coastal or wet-washdown settings, which is why non-metallic covers are common on residential exteriors and jobsite temporary power. Metal is the usual choice where physical abuse is the bigger risk than corrosion.
7) What color is the Cooper WIU-1 in-use cover, and will it match the rest of my exterior outlets?
Gray. For a property manager standardizing across a building, gray is the common in-use cover color and blends with most exterior and interior wall surfaces, so a run of these reads consistently across openings. Only one color is offered on the WIU-1.
8) What is the exact part number to order the Cooper single-gang while-in-use cover?
Order Cooper Wiring Devices WIU-1. That is the single-gang gray polycarbonate while-in-use weatherproof cover, and it is the only configuration in the family, so there is no finish or size option to specify.
