1) Can the HFDDC2045L be used on a 250 VDC solar array?
Yes. The HFDDC2045L is rated 600 Vac, 250 Vdc, and it is classed as a Vdc breaker for PV/solar service. On the DC side you are limited to 250 Vdc across the two poles, so confirm your array's maximum system voltage stays at or below that before you spec it.
2) Is the HFDDC2045L a complete breaker or just a trip unit I have to build up?
It ships as a complete molded case breaker with line and load terminals included, so there is no separate trip unit or terminal kit to order. The trip is fixed thermal, fixed magnetic, meaning nothing is adjustable in the field, you order the amperage you need.
3) What is the interrupting rating on this Eaton HFD 45 amp breaker?
42 kAIC at 600 Vac. That is the high-interrupt HFD frame, which is why it carries the HFD designation rather than the standard FD. If your available fault current at the panel exceeds 42 kA at 600 V, this breaker is not the right choice.
4) Why use a PV Guard DC breaker instead of a standard AC molded case breaker on the array side?
DC arcs do not self-extinguish the way an AC arc does at each zero crossing, so a breaker interrupting PV output needs a DC rating specifically. The HFDDC2045L carries a 250 Vdc rating alongside its 600 Vac rating and is built for PV/solar duty. A standard AC-only molded case breaker carries no DC rating and should not be used on the array conductors.
