1) Do I have to replace the whole breaker to change a Series C breaker from 600A to 500A?
No. On an LC-type Series C frame the rating is set by the interchangeable rating plug, so fitting an A6LC500 re-rates the existing 600A frame to 500A without pulling the breaker out for a new one. Confirm the frame in the panel is one of the LC/LCA/LCG/LCGA or HLC/HLCA/HLCG/HLCGA families first.
2) What amperage does the A6LC500 set the breaker to?
It sets the continuous current rating at 500A on a 600A Series C frame. That's how a rating plug works: the frame stays 600A, and the plug determines the amp rating the trip unit protects at, so you can down-rate a 600A breaker to 500A to match the conductor and load.
3) What is the magnetic trip range on the A6LC500 rating plug?
1500 to 5000A adjustable. On the SELTRONIC trip unit that gives you instantaneous pickup from roughly 3x to 10x the 500A rating, so you can set it high enough to ride through motor inrush or transformer magnetizing current without nuisance tripping, then bring it down for tighter short circuit protection where coordination allows.
4) Is the A6LC500 an electronic trip plug or does it contain the trip unit?
It is a rating plug for the SELTRONIC electronic trip system, not a trip unit on its own. The trip electronics live in the breaker; the plug tells them what current rating to protect at and carries the adjustable magnetic setting of 1500 to 5000A. You still need a functioning SELTRONIC-equipped Series C breaker for it to do anything.
5) Will the A6LC500 work in a high interrupting HLC breaker as well as a standard LC?
Yes. The same plug is listed for both the standard LC family (LC, LCA, LCG, LCGA) and the high interrupting HLC family (HLC, HLCA, HLCG, HLCGA), as long as the frame is 600A. The interrupting rating is a property of the breaker, not the plug, so it is unchanged by fitting this.
