1) Is this a line voltage thermostat or a low voltage one?
Line voltage. The T4398A1021/U wires directly into the heater circuit at 120, 208, 240 or 277 Vac and switches the load itself through an SPST contact, single stage heat. It is not a 24V thermostat and will not run a furnace or boiler control circuit. If you are controlling a gas furnace or a system with a 24V transformer, you need a low voltage thermostat instead.
2) What outlet box does this Honeywell baseboard thermostat mount on?
It mounts directly on a vertical 2 x 4 in. outlet box, or on a 4 x 4 in. box. Mounting orientation is vertical, and the body measures 4-1/2 in. high x 2-7/8 in. wide x 2-5/8 in. deep (115 x 73 x 67 mm), so allow for that depth off the box. The base is plastic.
3) Can I limit how high tenants can set the heat on this thermostat?
Yes. Range stops ship with the T4398A1021/U, so you can cap the top and bottom of the adjustment within the 50 F to 80 F setting range. Locking cover screws are included as well, which matters in multi-family and hospitality where you do not want the cover coming off. A thermometer is also in the box.
4) Will this thermostat connect to aluminum branch wiring?
It comes with 6 in. (150 mm) copper leadwires, which are suitable for connecting to aluminum wiring if approved CO/ALR connectors are used. Straight wire nuts on copper-to-aluminum are not the approved method.
5) How tight does this Honeywell thermostat hold room temperature?
Accuracy is 1 C with a 2 F (1 C) differential, using a vapor filled dual diaphragm sensing element that reacts quickly to temperature change. For a rental unit or hotel room on baseboard heat, that is tighter swing than a basic bimetal stat. The cover carries a thermometer so occupants can read actual room temperature.
