Emtek 83230 Faceplate & Screws For Standard or 28 Degree Rotation Latches, Square Corners

The Emtek 83230 is the latch faceplate itself plus the mounting screws. It's a replacement part, so there's no latch body, no springs, and no strike in the kit. If the latch mechanism in your door still works and you only need to change the visible plate on the edge of the door (damaged, wrong finish, or a finish change during a remodel), this is the piece. If the latch itself has failed, you need a complete latch, not the faceplate.

Square corners only. The 83230 has square corners and fits Emtek standard rotation and 28 degree rotation latches. If your door edge is mortised with rounded corners (a radius prep, which is what most drive-in and radius-corner latches leave behind), this plate won't sit in that pocket without recutting the mortise. Pull the existing plate first and look at the corners of the cutout before ordering.

A faceplate kit like the Emtek 83230 won't help if the latch mechanism is the problem. They solve different halves of the same problem. The Kwikset 84290 is a square corner plainlatch with a 2-3/8 inch backset, meaning the complete latch assembly with its own faceplate attached. If the latch body in the door is sound and only the visible plate is wrong, the 83230 is the part; if the latch itself is failing or the backset is wrong, a plate cannot fix that.

The 83230 is a residential faceplate and screw set for standard or 28 degree rotation latches, so it is not the part to specify for an opening where a rated latch is called out on the drawing. For that, look at latches carrying a UL listing in their own right: the Kwikset 83521 RCAL plain latch is a UL 3 hour latch for BBL, KNL, CNL and PLL trim, and the Kwikset 83518 RCAL adjustable square drive latch is likewise a UL 3 hour latch. Those are complete latch assemblies rather than a cosmetic plate.

Residential. Emtek classes the 83230 faceplate as residential door hardware, so it belongs on interior and entry doors in homes, apartments, and light multi-family units. For a commercial opening carrying a fire rating or a Grade 1 spec, this is not the part to spec, and a residential faceplate has no place on a rated door assembly.

The Emtek 83230 faceplate is the one carrying the finish range: it comes in Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), French Antique (US7), Medium Bronze (MB), Matte White (MW), Satin Rose Gold (SRG), Brushed Stainless Steel (SS) and Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). Peer parts such as the Deltana DLP23875 drive-in latch and the Kwikset 84290 plainlatch are specified by function and backset, which is why swapping in an 83230 faceplate is the usual move when the latch works but the exposed plate needs to match the other doors.

Backset is a property of the latch body, not the faceplate. The Deltana DLP23875 and the Kwikset 83518 are adjustable latches - the Deltana adjusts between a 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Kwikset 83518 is an adjustable square drive latch. The Emtek 83230 is the square corner faceplate and its screws, so it takes whatever backset the latch already installed in the door was set to and does not change it.

Not handed and not electronic. A latch faceplate is a symmetrical plate over the latch face, so it goes on a left or right hand door either way, and Emtek lists the 83230 as a non electronic part. That means it's mechanical trim only, with nothing to wire and no handing to declare when you order. The only thing you specify is the finish.

The catalog spec on the 83230 lists brass in the product description and steel as the material and substrate in the spec attributes. Rather than guess which applies to the plate you'll receive, judge it on what matters at the door: it is a finished latch faceplate offered in fifteen Emtek finishes, and the finish is what has to match the rest of the trim.
