Emtek 8366-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Emtek 8366 double cylinder deadbolt fit a standard 1-3/4 inch door with existing 2-1/8 inch bore?
Yes. The 8366 deadbolt drops into standard door prep: 2-1/8 inch cross bore, 1 inch edge bore, and a door thickness range of 1-3/8 to 2 inches. Standard build is set up for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the usual exterior door thickness, so a door already bored for a tubular deadbolt takes it without new drilling.
2) Which backset do I order on the Emtek 8366 deadbolt, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch?
Both are offered and backset is a required selection on the 8366. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore: 2-3/8 inches is the standard latch, and 2-3/4 inches must be specified. If you are replacing an existing deadbolt, match what is in the door rather than guessing, since the two backsets are the two normal residential options and the wrong one will not line up with the bore.
3) What is the difference between a double cylinder deadbolt and a single cylinder one, and should I use the Emtek 8366 on a door with glass?
The 8366 is keyed on both sides, so there is no thumbturn inside; a key is needed to unlock from within. That is what people put on doors with glass sidelites or glazed panels, where someone could reach through and turn an interior thumbturn. The tradeoff is egress: everyone inside must have a key at hand, and many jurisdictions restrict double cylinder deadbolts on required exit doors. If you want key outside and turn inside, order the single cylinder version of the #8 instead.
4) Can the Emtek 8366 deadbolt be keyed alike with my existing Schlage or Weiser keys?
Yes, on either system. The 8366 ships with a Schlage C keyway as standard, and a Weiser WR5 keyway is available as a no-upcharge substitution that can be keyed into an existing Weiser system. Keyed alike and keyed different are both selectable at no charge, and you can supply a key code to have it cut to match the keys already in the building.
5) I need a commercial Grade 1 or Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt, not a residential one. What should I use instead of the Emtek 8366?
The 8366 is a residential deadbolt, so for a commercial opening that has to meet a graded spec, look at a graded double cylinder instead. The Design Hardware D1 Series is Grade 1 double cylinder for 1-3/4 inch doors and extra heavy duty. The Dexter DB1000 Series double cylinder is Grade 1 and covers 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, which handles thinner leaves. Delaney's LU Series double cylinder is Grade 2 in stainless steel (US32D). All three trade the Emtek's solid brass decorative finishes for a graded commercial rating.
6) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. Will the Emtek 8366 deadbolt still work?
Up to 2 inches, yes, but you have to state the thickness when ordering rather than take the standard build. The #8 deadbolt covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and thickness is a specified field on the order. Above 2 inches this is the wrong part. If you need a thick-door deadbolt in a decorative brass line, Deltana's 7312KA2 double cylinder also tops out at 2 inches, so the answer there is the same.
7) I want a key outside and a thumbturn inside instead of a double cylinder. What are my options?
That function is cylinder x thumbturn, and the 8366 is not it, since it is keyed on both faces. Within the Emtek Brass #8 line the single cylinder version of the same deadbolt is the one to order. Across brands, Accentra's D111 is Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn on a 2-3/8 inch backset for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and Hager's 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn that also runs the Schlage C keyway, which matters if you are keying everything to one system.
8) Do I need to specify handing for the Emtek 8366 deadbolt?
No handing needed. The 8366 is a tubular deadbolt with no latch bevel, so the same part works on a left or right hand door swinging either direction. What you do have to specify is backset and, if the door is not 1-3/4 inches, the door thickness.
9) What decorative alternatives are there to the Emtek 8366 double cylinder deadbolt?
Staying in the decorative residential lane, Baldwin's Reserve double cylinder deadbolts come in contemporary round and contemporary square trim, and the Baldwin Estates 8011 is a contemporary 1-5/8 inch double cylinder. Deltana's 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. The Emtek #8 differs in being solid brass throughout with a Schlage C or Weiser keyway option and American Classic rather than contemporary trim.
10) Does the Emtek 8366 deadbolt come with a strike, or do I need to buy one?
Strike is included. Every #8 deadbolt ships with a brass trim strike plus a heavy gauge steel understrike that sits behind it in the jamb. Nothing extra to order for the frame side.
11) What finishes does the Emtek #8 brass deadbolt come in?
Ten finishes across the #8 deadbolt: Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), French Antique (US7), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), and Polished Chrome (US26). Every one of those is available in both the Schlage C and Weiser keyways. If you are matching existing Emtek trim on the door, pick the finish code off the knob or lever rose rather than by eye, since Unlacquered Brass will patina over time while Polished Brass Lifetime holds its look.
12) Is the Emtek 8366 solid brass or brass plated?
Solid brass through the cylinder, housing, collar, thumbturn and rosette, with a hardened steel bolt and a heavy gauge steel understrike behind the brass trim strike that ships with every unit. It is a residential product in Emtek's Brass #8 series, American Classic styling, so it is aimed at homes and high-end residential rather than commercial traffic openings.
