1) Does the Emtek 8381 Wilshire thumbturn privacy bolt include a knob or lever, or do I order that separately?
The 8381 is the privacy bolt only. It comes with the thumbturn, the Wilshire rosette, the privacy latch, strike plate, and an emergency release tool. The knob or lever passage set is a separate order, and it can be any Emtek Brass passage set. Leversets require handing when you order them.
2) Will this Emtek privacy bolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door, and what bore does it need?
It fits doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, which covers both older interior doors and standard modern ones. The cross bore is 2-1/8 inches, the same bore a standard tubular lockset uses, so a door already prepped for a bored lock usually takes it without redrilling. Thicker doors than 1-3/4 inches need to be specified.
3) My door is bored at a 2-3/4 inch backset. Does the Emtek 8381 latch work, or is it 2-3/8 only?
Both work. The latch is adjustable for 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, but the standard shipped configuration is 2-3/8, so call out 2-3/4 on the order if that is how the door is bored.
4) Why use a separate thumbturn privacy bolt instead of a push-button privacy knob?
A privacy knob locks through the knob itself, so the lock and the trim are one unit. The 8381 splits them: a passage knob or lever operates the door, and a deadbolt-style thumbturn above it throws the privacy bolt. It gives you the two-piece look on a bed or bath door and lets you change the thumbturn design without touching the lockset. If you want one hole and one piece of hardware, order a privacy knob or lever instead.
5) Can I get the thumbturn in a different finish than the rosette on the Emtek Wilshire privacy bolt?
Yes, they are specified separately. Ten finishes on the rosette and the same ten on the thumbturn: Flat Black (US19), French Antique (US7), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Pewter (US15A), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Brass (US4), Satin Nickel (US15), and Unlacquered Brass (US3NL). Mixing a black thumbturn with a brass rosette is a supported combination, not a special order.
6) Is this Emtek privacy bolt single sided, and how do you get in if someone locks themselves in the bathroom?
Single rosette means the thumbturn is on the inside face only; the outside gets a plain rosette or nothing depending on how you order the trim. For lockouts, the set ships with an emergency release tool that retracts the bolt from outside, which is the standard requirement on a bed or bath door.
7) Can I specify a square corner latch faceplate for a mortised door edge?
Yes. The privacy latch is offered with either a round or square corner faceplate, so it can drop into an edge already routed square from a previous lock rather than forcing you to patch the mortise.
8) Is the Emtek 8381 Wilshire suitable for a commercial building or multi-family corridor door?
It is a residential product, solid brass, non-keyed, and not rated for commercial door use. For apartment interiors, single-family, and hospitality guest rooms it is on spec; for a commercial corridor or anywhere the opening needs a graded cylindrical or mortise lock, use a commercial Grade 1 or Grade 2 lockset instead.
9) Will the Wilshire thumbturn bolt match Emtek knobs I already have on other doors?
It pairs with any Emtek Brass passage set, so if the rest of the house is Emtek brass trim you can match the existing finish by picking the same code on the rosette and thumbturn. The rosette is the Wilshire pattern, so the thumbturn shape is where you tune the look, stepped profiles reading more traditional and the plain arched or rectangular more restrained against the American Classic styling.
