1) Can I key the Emtek EMPowered 2 deadbolt to match my other doors?
The keyed version uses a Schlage C keyway, so it can be keyed into an existing Schlage C system by a locksmith. That is the most common residential keyway in North America, which is why it matters if you are trying to keep one key for the whole house or a small rental portfolio. Among the deadbolts we carry, the Hager 3115 and Hager 3214 also use the Schlage C keyway if you need mechanical deadbolts on the other openings under the same key.
2) What is the difference between the Bluetooth and the Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi versions of the EMPowered 2 deadbolt?
Both versions are ordered the same way otherwise, in the same five finishes. Bluetooth alone gives you app control at the door and shared access codes. Adding the Wi-Fi module is what gets you the 24/7 activity feed, real-time notifications of who came and went, and the ability to check and control the lock from off site. If you manage a property you are not standing in front of, the Wi-Fi version is the one that does the job.
3) Does the Emtek EMPowered 2 keyed deadbolt still open with a physical key if the batteries die?
Yes, this is the keyed model, so there is a mechanical cylinder on the outside in a Schlage C keyway. Fingerprint and app entry are the everyday methods, but the key override is always there. If you want the version with no exterior keyhole at all, that is the Touch Key-Free variant, not this one.
4) Is the Emtek EMPowered 2 touch deadbolt suitable for a commercial building entrance?
No. It's a residential-duty electronic deadbolt, brass, tubular, and it carries no commercial grade rating. For a commercial opening you want a Grade 1 unit. Among what we stock, the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. If you need it electronic and commercial, look at the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D RFID electronic deadbolt or the Nova-D.
5) My door is 2 inches thick. Will an electronic deadbolt work on it?
The EMPowered 2 Touch deadbolt covers 1-3/8 up to 2 inches, so a full 2 inch slab is within range. That's wider than most of the mechanical deadbolts around it: the Dexter DB2000 tops out at 1-3/4 inches, the Dexter DB1000 at 1-7/8 inches, and the Accentra D111 at 1-3/4 inches. If you have a thick entry door, that thickness range is the deciding spec.
6) What is an equivalent electronic deadbolt to the Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt if the opening needs RFID credentials instead of a smartphone app?
The Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt is an electronic deadbolt read by touchscreen, keyed, and paired with the Yale Access App over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Where credentials need to be RFID cards or fobs rather than phones, the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an electronic deadbolt with RFID and BLE plus electronic lock override, and the Dormakaba Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart electronic deadbolt. Both read a card at the door; the EMPowered 2 reads a fingerprint or a code at the touchscreen and carries a Schlage C keyway for key override.
7) What is a simpler keyed deadbolt to use instead of an electronic one on a door that does not need app access?
On openings where no electronics are wanted, a mechanical cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt covers the same locking job. The Hager 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway, fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and is fire rated; the Hager 3215 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a 1 inch throw in the same door thickness range. Both share the Schlage C keyway used by the Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt, so a keyed-alike group can span the electronic and the mechanical doors.
8) The Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt is a residential lock. What electronic deadbolt should be used on a commercial opening instead?
The Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt is a residential tubular deadbolt. For commercial openings, the Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in a brushed steel finish and the Codelocks CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt. Where the deadbolt is driven by an access control system rather than a keypad, the DynaLock 1300 Series is a heavy duty mortise electric deadbolt. Each of those mounts differently from the EMPowered 2, which is a tubular lock through a 2-1/8 inch cross bore.
9) Which deadbolts fit a door thicker than 2 inches, since the Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt tops out at 2 inches?
The Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. For a thicker door, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock covering 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, cylinder x blank. It is a mechanical deadlock, so the touchscreen, fingerprint and app functions do not carry across.
10) What looks like a substitute for the Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt but will not give the same operation?
Several deadbolt-named parts do a different job. The Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock, non-keyed, blank plate x thumbturn, so there is no outside credential at all. The Callan 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, thumbturn only from inside. The Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer and the BEST 8T is a T Series tubular deadbolt tube component, both parts rather than complete locks. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike. The Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt is a complete keyed electronic deadbolt with a touchscreen reader.
11) What deadbolt should be specified instead when the opening needs a Grade 1 rating rather than a residential electronic lock?
The Emtek EMPowered 2 Touch Keyed Deadbolt is a residential deadbolt. Where a Grade 1 deadbolt is called for on the drawing, the Design Hardware D1 Series is an extra heavy duty Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset, cylinder x thumbturn, and the Deltana CL200LM is a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt. The Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and 6-pin cylinder, matching the Emtek keyway for keying purposes.
12) Can I add fingerprint entry to a lock I already have, or do I need the whole deadbolt?
The Emtek Touch Keyed Deadbolt is a complete deadbolt with the fingerprint reader built into the exterior escutcheon, so it replaces the deadbolt outright. Emtek does publish a separate Smart Lock Upgrade path for the EMPowered 2 line, but the touchscreen reader itself comes as part of this deadbolt, not as an add-on to a mechanical one.
13) Do I need a smartphone to use the Emtek EMPowered 2 deadbolt?
For setup, yes. The Yale Access App runs on iOS or Android and is what you use for installation, adding users, and remote access, and it's supported in the US and Canada only. Day to day, tenants and family don't need the app, a fingerprint opens it in under half a second. The same app also manages Emtek, Yale, and August Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, which matters if you're standardizing across several units.
14) Can I give a contractor or cleaner temporary access with the Emtek touch deadbolt?
Yes. Access through the Yale Access App can be set permanent, scheduled, or temporary, so a trades visit or a turnover crew gets a window rather than a key you have to collect back. No separate backset selection is needed, the deadbolt covers both 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backsets. What you do pick on the order is the finish, one of five, and the electronics: Bluetooth, or Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore before you order anything else on the opening, since the strike and the door prep have to agree.
