1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon ERG4005 crimp tool handle?
The ERG4005 crimps terminals on conductors from 16 AWG up through 6 AWG, so it covers everything from control wiring up to feeder-size stranded conductors on one tool. If your work runs smaller than 16 AWG or larger than 6 AWG, you need a different die set or tool.
2) Is the ERG4005 for insulated or non-insulated terminals?
Non-insulated only. It is set up for non-insulated Sta-Kon terminals in the B, C, D and E size designations. Insulated nylon or vinyl terminals need a tool with insulation-supporting nests instead, or you will crush the sleeve.
3) Can an electrician use the Sta-Kon ERG4005 one-handed on a ladder or in a panel?
It is built with a palm grip handle, which lets you drive the crimp with the heel of your hand rather than finger strength. That is what makes the larger sizes (up to 6 AWG) workable in a panel or overhead without a bench. The handles are black and orange, so it is easy to spot in a crowded tool bag.
4) Will the ERG4005 crimp ring and fork terminals, or just butt splices?
Its job is crimping terminals, and the B, C, D and E designations are terminal barrel sizes rather than terminal shapes, so rings, forks, spades and butt splices in those non-insulated barrel sizes all crimp in the same nests. What decides fit is the barrel size and the conductor, 16 through 6 AWG, not the tongue style.
5) Does the ERG4005 need a hydraulic head or battery tool to finish larger lugs?
No. It is a manual hand tool, so no power head, battery or hydraulic pump is involved anywhere in its range. For terminals above 6 AWG you would move to a separate hydraulic or battery crimper, but everything from 16 to 6 AWG is hand-crimped with this one.
