Sta-Kon 2RA18X – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon 2RA18X butt splice accept?
The Sta-Kon 2RA18X vinyl insulated butt splice is sized for 22 to 18 AWG copper conductors, which is the range you hit on thermostat wire, control wiring, low-voltage signal runs and small fixture leads. Both ends of the barrel take the same range, so you can splice 22 to 18 or any combination inside that band. Anything 16 AWG or larger needs the next barrel size up (blue, 16-14 AWG) rather than this red one.
2) Can I use these splices in a 600V control panel?
Yes. The 2RA18X is rated 600V, which covers 120V, 208/240V and 480V control and power circuits as well as the low-voltage wiring it is most often used on. Keep in mind a butt splice is an in-line connection, so in a panel it still has to land inside an enclosure or raceway per code for the circuit it serves.
3) Are Sta-Kon butt splices UL listed for inspected work?
They carry UL file E9809, so the 2RA18X can be used on inspected commercial and residential installations where the inspector wants a listed connector rather than a twist-and-tape splice. Note that listing applies to a properly crimped connection with the correct die for the red 22-18 barrel.
4) Why is this butt splice red, and does the color mean anything?
Red is the industry color code for the 22-18 AWG barrel size, so the insulation color tells an electrician at a glance which gauge range the splice is for without reading the bag. On the Sta-Kon splice the red is vinyl, which also gives you moisture and handling protection over the crimped barrel.
5) Will these hold up spliced inside a furnace cabinet or near a motor?
The vinyl insulation on this Sta-Kon splice is rated to 105 C (221 F), so it handles the elevated ambient you see in HVAC cabinets, luminaire channels and motor control enclosures. For higher temperatures than that, you want a nylon insulated or heat-shrink insulated splice instead of vinyl.
6) Do I need a special crimper for these red 22-18 butt splices?
Use an insulated-terminal crimp tool with the red 22-18 AWG nest, and crimp both ends of the barrel. Pliers or a bare-terminal die will crush the vinyl and give you a connection that pulls out. Crimp, then tug-test each end before you tuck the splice back in.
7) Is a butt splice the right choice, or should I use a wire nut?
A butt splice makes an in-line, low-profile connection on two conductor ends, which is what you want when repairing a cut lead, extending a fixture whip, or pulling the joint through a tight raceway or cabinet. A twist-on wire connector is better when you are joining three or more conductors or need a reusable joint in a box. For 22-18 AWG in-line repairs, the red 2RA18X is the connector that keeps the splice small and mechanically crimped.
8) How many Sta-Kon 2RA18X splices come in a pack?
The 2RA18X is sold in a 100-piece pack, which suits truck stock or a panel build where you are making a run of 22-18 AWG splices at once rather than a single repair.
9) Are these splices made in the USA?
Yes, the Sta-Kon 2RA18X is manufactured in the United States, which matters on government, institutional and federally funded jobs carrying domestic-sourcing requirements.
