Sta-Kon 14RB-6FLX – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon 14RB-6FLX locking fork terminal crimp onto?
The 14RB-6FLX takes 18 to 14 AWG stranded wire. The blue vinyl insulation is the standard color code for that gauge band, so on a panel where you're mixing sizes the blue sleeve tells you at a glance it's the 16/14 range barrel and not a red 22-18 or a yellow 12-10.
2) What is the barrel on this Sta-Kon terminal made of, and does that matter for aluminum conductors?
The barrel is copper. That means it is for copper conductors only, not aluminum. Running aluminum into a copper-only barrel sets up a dissimilar metal joint that creeps and oxidizes, and it is not a listed use. For aluminum you need a terminal marked AL or AL9CU.
3) Is a locking fork terminal better than a ring terminal for terminal block work?
A locking fork like the 14RB-6FLX slides under a captive screw without removing the screw, which is why it's the usual pick for crowded terminal strips, contactor blocks and control panels where you can't back a screw all the way out. The locking tangs on the fork resist pulling back off under vibration, so you get most of the retention of a ring without the disassembly. Go to a ring terminal when the connection is high vibration and safety critical and you can pull the stud.
4) Is the Sta-Kon 14RB-6FLX fork terminal UL listed?
It carries UL file E9809. That is the reference an inspector or a spec reviewer will want when the submittal calls for UL recognized wire terminations.
5) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon insulated terminals?
Insulated vinyl terminals like the 14RB-6FLX crimp with an insulated-terminal tool that compresses the barrel through the sleeve, color-coded to the blue 18-14 nest. A bare-terminal or open-barrel die will split the vinyl and give you an unlisted crimp. Sta-Kon makes a matching hand tool line, and any insulated crimper with a blue 16/14 nest will seat it.
6) Is the Sta-Kon 14RB-6FLX made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what matters if you're buying against a Buy American or domestic-preference clause on a government, school or healthcare job.
