Sta-Kon RC704 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RC704 ring terminal accept?
The RC704 is sized for 12-10 AWG stranded copper wire. The yellow nylon insulation is the standard color code for that gauge range, so a yellow barrel tells you at a glance it is the 12-10 terminal and not the blue 16-14 or red 22-18. Running it on 14 AWG leaves the barrel oversized and the crimp unreliable.
2) Is a ring terminal or a fork terminal better for a vibrating panel or motor connection?
Use the ring style, like the RC704. A ring tongue is closed, so it cannot back off a loosening screw the way a spade or fork tongue can, which is why ring terminals are the choice on motors, transformers and anything that vibrates. A fork terminal only earns its place where you need to slip the lug out without fully removing the screw, typically dense terminal blocks on service work.
3) Is the RC704 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum conductors?
The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductors only. Terminating aluminum wire needs an AL9CU or AL-rated connector with the proper inhibitor compound; crimping aluminum into a copper barrel sets up galvanic corrosion at the joint.
4) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon RC704 terminals?
Yellow 12-10 insulated terminals like the RC704 need the matching 12-10 nest on an insulated-terminal crimper. The tool is not included with the terminals. Using the smaller 16-14 or 22-18 die will split the nylon sleeve or under-form the barrel, and pliers will not produce a holding crimp.
5) Does the nylon insulation on this ring terminal hold up better than vinyl?
The RC704 uses nylon insulation rather than vinyl. Nylon takes more abuse during pull-through and flexing, resists cut-through and holds its shape better at elevated temperature, which is why spec jobs and panel builds often call out nylon insulated terminals specifically. The sleeve also supports the wire behind the crimp to cut strand flexing.
6) Is the Sta-Kon RC704 made in the USA for Buy American or government jobs?
Country of origin on the RC704 ring terminal is the United States, which is the detail institutional and government procurement usually needs on record. The part number to reference is RC704.
