1) What wire sizes will the F4P 5-pole lever connector accept, and can I mix solid and stranded?
The F4P 5-pole push-in lever connector takes 12 to 24 AWG copper, and it accepts solid, stranded, and fine-stranded conductors. That means you can land a solid 12 AWG branch conductor and a fine-stranded fixture lead in the same connector, which is the usual situation on a luminaire or control tie-in. Contacts are tin-plated copper. Aluminum conductors are outside what the connector is rated for.
2) Can I use a lever connector on a 277V commercial lighting circuit?
Yes. The F4P lever connector is rated to 600 V max, so 120, 208, 240, and 277 V circuits are all inside its rating, and so is 480 V. Current rating is 32 A max, which covers anything on a 20 A or 30 A branch circuit. It is UL Listed.
3) How many wires does the F4P 5-pole connector join, and what do I use if I only have three?
Five. Each of the five poles takes one conductor, so a 5-pole connector makes one splice of up to five wires. If your splice is smaller, use a 2-pole or 3-pole version of the same F4P lever connector rather than leaving poles empty, so it takes less room in the box. Unused poles on a 5-pole do not cause a problem electrically, they just waste space.
4) Is a push-in lever connector a better choice than a twist-on wire nut for a junction box?
The trade-off is reusability versus bulk. The F4P lever connector is tool-free and reusable: flip the orange lever, pull the conductor, re-land it without cutting back and re-stripping. It also has a transparent polycarbonate body so you can see the conductor is fully seated, which a twist-on does not give you. A twist-on is cheaper per joint and takes less room in a crowded box. For a splice you will never touch again, either works; for anything you will open again, the lever wins.
5) Will these lever connectors hold up inside a recessed can or a hot attic run?
Rated to 105 C (221 F), so the connector is suitable for the elevated temperatures in a luminaire wiring compartment or an attic plenum run. The housing is polycarbonate, not a rubber or silicone boot, so this is a dry-location terminal connection, not a direct-burial or submersible splice.
