Standard-grade F4P PVC electrical tape is a general-purpose vinyl insulation tape available in ten colors, designed for reliable electrical insulating, wire bundling, and color-coding tasks. Made from durable PVC (vinyl) with an aggressive rubber-based adhesive, this tape provides strong, long-lasting hold even in challenging conditions, resisting moisture and many chemical. It is UL-listed for up to 600 V applications and is flame-retardant (self-extinguishing), ensuring safe performance in electrical installations. Each roll measures 3/4 inch in width and 66 feet in length, with a thickness of about 0.007 inches (~7 mil), and it performs in temperatures up to 80 °C (176 °F) while remaining flexible down to around -10 °C (14 °F).

F4P F4P TBK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is F4P vinyl electrical tape rated for 600 volt wiring?
The F4P standard-grade PVC tape is UL-listed for use up to 600 V, which covers building branch circuits, feeders, and control wiring in commercial and multi-family work. It is also flame retardant (self-extinguishing), so it will not carry flame along a bundle. PVC vinyl body with a rubber-based adhesive.
2) What size roll is F4P electrical tape and how many rolls come in a pack?
Each roll is 3/4 inch wide by 66 feet long, the standard trade size that fits every common tape holder and pouch, and it ships 10 rolls to a pack. That is the pack size electricians and MRO stockrooms buy for a truck or a crib rather than a single job.
3) Can I use this tape for phase identification and color coding on a panel?
Phase marking is one of its listed applications, and it comes in ten colors: black, blue, brown, green, gray, orange, purple, red, white, and yellow. That covers both common phase-color conventions (black/red/blue for 120/208 and brown/orange/yellow for 277/480) plus green, gray, and white for grounds and neutrals. Buying the pack in a single color is how most crews stock a panel-marking kit.
4) Will vinyl electrical tape hold up in an unconditioned attic or a cold mechanical room?
The F4P vinyl tape performs from -10 C to 80 C (14 to 176 F), so a hot attic run or a cold garage or loading-dock panel is inside its range. Below 14 F the vinyl stiffens and the wrap will not conform well, so unheated exterior work in a hard freeze is where you would step up to a rubber splicing or all-weather tape instead.
5) Is standard-grade PVC tape enough, or do I need a premium all-weather tape?
Standard-grade general-purpose vinyl like this is what you use for indoor insulating, wire bundling, harness wrap, and color coding, and it resists moisture and many chemicals. Where it is not the right call: direct-burial or submerged splices, outdoor UV exposure over years, and cold-weather exterior wrapping. Those jobs want a premium 7 mil all-weather vinyl or a rubber splicing tape overwrapped with vinyl. For everything inside a building at 600 V or less, the general-purpose grade is the normal spec.
6) How thick is F4P electrical tape and how many wraps do I need over a wire nut or splice?
The tape runs about 0.007 inches, roughly 7 mil, which is the common trade thickness for general-purpose vinyl. At 7 mil the usual practice is a half-lapped wrap, which doubles to about 14 mil per pass, and two passes over a splice gets you to a build comparable to the conductor insulation. Stretch it slightly as you wrap so it conforms, and finish the last turn without tension so the end does not flag back.
7) Does F4P tape come in a single color per pack or mixed colors?
Color is the option you pick when ordering, and each pack of 10 is one color. Ten choices are offered: black, blue, brown, green, gray, orange, purple, red, white, and yellow. If you want a full phase-marking set on the truck you order a pack per color rather than a variety pack.
8) Can I use electrical tape instead of a wire nut or connector to make a splice?
No. Vinyl tape like this is insulation and identification, not a mechanical connection. The conductors still need an approved connector, wire nut, crimp, or split bolt, and the tape goes over the finished connection to insulate and seal it. Its listed applications are electrical insulation, wire bundling, phase identification, and color coding, and taping a bare twist with no connector is not any of them.
9) Is this tape safe to use on a heated conductor or near a ballast?
Continuous service tops out at 80 C (176 F) on the F4P vinyl tape, so a normally loaded 75 C or 90 C conductor is inside it. What it will not tolerate is direct contact with a hot lamp housing, a heater element, or anything running past 176 F, where the vinyl softens and the adhesive migrates. High-temperature work is a glass cloth or silicone tape job.
