1) Will the Falcon 25MELK electric latch retraction kit work on my existing Falcon exit device, or do I have to replace the whole device?
The 25MELK is a retrofit kit. It converts an existing mechanical Falcon 24 or 25 Series exit device to motorized electric latch retraction without replacing the device itself. The one exclusion is the 25-M mortise version, which the kit does not support. So if you have 25-R rim, 25-V vertical rod, or a 24 Series device already hung, you keep the device and add the motor assembly. Check the model stamp on your device before ordering, because a 25-M mortise opening needs a different approach entirely.
2) Does the Falcon 25MELK need its own dedicated power supply, or will my existing access control power supply run it?
Inrush is 1.0 amp, which is low enough that the kit runs off standard Schlage power supplies and option boards with no power supply upgrade. That low inrush also buys you longer wire runs from the panel to the door, which matters when the power supply room is nowhere near the opening. Older solenoid-style latch retraction pulls a much heavier inrush spike, which is what usually forces a supply upgrade; the motorized design is what avoids it here.
3) Can I put electric latch retraction on a fire rated exit device, or does that violate the fire door?
Electric latch retraction is available on fire rated Falcon devices as well as panic devices. On a fire rated opening the kit drops power automatically on a fire alarm signal, so the latches project and the door relatches and stays positively latched during an alarm. Free mechanical egress through the push bar is preserved at all times, powered or not. This is the reason latch retraction is used instead of mechanical dogging on fire rated doors: a fire device cannot be dogged, but it can be electrically retracted and released on alarm.
4) What do I need to specify when ordering a Falcon 25MELK latch retraction kit?
Two things: finish and device width. Finish is US26D satin chrome or US28 aluminum anodized, and width is 3 foot or 4 foot, matching the width of the exit device already on the door. All four combinations are built, so a 4 foot device in US28 is orderable the same as a 3 foot in US26D. Measure the existing push bar rail, not the door leaf, and match the finish to the device you are converting so the retrofit does not read as a patch job.
5) Should I use electric latch retraction or just dog the exit device during business hours?
Mechanical dogging holds the latch retracted until somebody walks over with a dogging key and undogs it, and it cannot be used on a fire rated device at all. The 25MELK retracts the push bar electronically instead, so the door is controlled from your access system: momentary unlatch on a valid credential, or an extended timed free-entry period for store hours. No dogging tool, no manual trip to the door at open and close, and the opening can be secured instantly from the panel. If the door has no access control and no schedule to hold, mechanical dogging on a non-fire device is the simpler answer.
6) How does the Falcon 25MELK tie into a card reader for a main entrance?
The kit is what makes a mechanical exit device credential-controlled. A valid read at the reader signals the kit to retract the latch momentarily so the door pulls open from the outside, then the latch projects again. Egress from inside is always mechanical through the push bar, independent of the reader and independent of power.
