Falcon KB628A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Falcon KB628A key blank cut or uncut when it ships?
The KB628A is a blank. It ships uncut and has to be cut to your bitting on a key machine before it will operate a core. Order it when you are duplicating existing keys or originating a new keying system in house.
2) Will a Falcon KB628A blank work in a small format interchangeable core?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. The KB628A is an SFIC blank in the A keyway, so it is cut for figure-eight small format interchangeable cores keyed to A. It will not work in a large format or conventional mortise or rim cylinder, which use a different blank entirely.
3) My building's SFIC cores are keyed to the A keyway. Is this the right Falcon blank?
If your cores are A keyway, the KB628A matches. Keyway has to agree exactly between blank and core, so an A blank enters only A cores. Cores keyed to any other SFIC keyway need the blank for that keyway, not this one.
4) Can I buy Falcon KB628A key blanks in bulk, or only one at a time?
Both. The KB628A is sold as a single blank or in a box of 50. Locksmiths and property managers originating a master key system usually take the 50; a single makes sense when you just need one more tenant or spare key cut.
5) What is the difference between an SFIC key blank like the Falcon KB628A and a control key?
Same blank, different cut. The KB628A is a standard operating key blank, so cut normally it throws the lock. A control key is cut on the same SFIC blank to a second shear line that pulls the core out of the housing. If you need to remove and swap cores, that key has to be cut to the control bitting, not the operating bitting.
