Fernco 1056-43 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Fernco 1056-43 flexible coupling connect?
The Fernco 1056-43 is a reducing coupling that joins 4 inch pipe on one end to 3 inch pipe on the other. It is a flexible PVC sleeve with clamps, so it makes the size transition without a solvent weld or a threaded joint.
2) Is the Fernco 1056-43 a reducer, or do I need a separate bushing?
No separate bushing needed. The 1056-43 is a one-piece reducing coupling, 4 inch to 3 inch, so the step down happens inside the coupling itself. If both of your pipe ends are the same diameter, this is the wrong part and you want a straight coupling instead.
3) Can I use a Fernco flexible coupling to join different pipe materials, like cast iron to PVC?
That is the usual reason to reach for one. The 1056-43 clamps onto the outside of each pipe end rather than bonding to it, so it is used to make transitions in drain, waste and vent work where a solvent weld or a hub joint isn't practical. Match the coupling to the outside diameters of the pipe you're joining, not just the nominal material.
4) Do I need any extra clamps or hardware to install the 1056-43?
The clamps come on the coupling, so installation is a matter of sliding the sleeve over both pipe ends and tightening the bands with a nut driver or torque wrench. No primer, no cement, no threading. For buried or unsupported runs, the pipe on both sides still needs to be properly bedded or hung so the joint isn't carrying load.
