Fernco 1059-44 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Fernco 1059-44 coupling connect?
The Fernco 1059-44 is a 4 inch by 4 inch flexible coupling that joins a PVC plastic socket (hub) on one side to plastic pipe on the other. Both ends are 4 inch, so it is a straight, same-size transition rather than a reducer.
2) Why does one side of the Fernco 1059-44 say socket and the other say pipe?
The two ends are sized differently because a PVC socket (the bell or hub end of a fitting) has a larger outside diameter than the plain pipe itself. The socket side of the 1059-44 is built to seal on that hub OD, and the pipe side seals on the plain 4 inch plastic pipe. Put the ends on the wrong way and the clamps will not draw down properly.
3) Is a Fernco flexible coupling a repair fitting or can I use it on new work?
A flexible coupling like the 1059-44 is a mechanical, no-solvent connection, which makes it the usual choice for repairs, tie-ins, and transitions where you cannot rotate or cement the pipe. Local plumbing code governs where flexible couplings may be used and whether they need to remain accessible, so check the authority having jurisdiction before burying one or closing a wall over it.
