Fernco 3005-44 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the difference between a shielded coupling and a plain rubber no-hub coupling?
A shielded coupling like the Fernco 3005-44 Proflex wraps the neoprene sleeve in an outer shield, which resists shear loads at the joint. A plain unshielded rubber coupling is the flexible sleeve and clamps only, and it is generally used where the pipe is fully supported and shear is not a concern. If your inspector calls for a shielded transition coupling on a 4 inch line, the plain sleeve type will not satisfy it.
2) Is the Fernco 3005-44 sleeve neoprene or PVC?
Neoprene. The 3005-44 uses a neoprene sleeve, which is the standard elastomer for DWV drain, waste and vent service couplings rather than a rigid PVC fitting. It flexes at the joint instead of being solvent welded, so no glue or primer is involved in the connection.
3) Can I use a Fernco 3005-44 coupling to repair a broken section of 4 inch drain line?
Yes, that is the usual use. A 4 inch flexible shielded coupling like the 3005-44 lets a property manager or plumber cut out a damaged section and rejoin the run without solvent welding or a hot lead joint, which is why these get kept on the truck for underground and stack repairs. Both ends must land on 4 inch pipe.
