Stranded cable resists bending and work-hardens at the termination, so on a hinged door or a vibrating machine base it eventually fatigues and opens the bond. A flat braid flexes across its width through thousands of cycles and keeps a low-impedance path. Use stranded wire for static runs between fixed points, and the braid wherever the two bonded parts move, hinge, or shake. The braid is flat and flexible by construction, which is also why it tucks behind a door hinge where a cable loop would not.

The braid is tin-plated copper, and the tin is there to slow oxidation on the copper and to give a cleaner interface where the pad meets aluminum or galvanized surfaces. That makes it a reasonable choice for damp locations and outdoor enclosures. Bare copper bolted straight to aluminum is the connection that gives trouble; the plating on this braid is what keeps that joint from degrading. Use an antioxidant compound on aluminum landings as usual.
