It's a flexible tin-plated copper braid connector used as a flexible link between two rigid bus or terminal pads, typically on switchgear, transformers and substation bus work where thermal movement, vibration or slight misalignment has to be absorbed. The braid is flat and flexible rather than a solid bar, and it terminates in two-hole pads at each end for bolting to NEMA-drilled bus.

The braid measures 38.1 mm by 559 mm, and the 559 mm length is also called out as 22 inches. Use that overall length when you lay out the gap between the two bus pads you are bridging, and allow for the slack you want in the braid rather than pulling it straight.

It's a 400 amp braid connector. Match that against the continuous current of the bus run it is bridging; if your bus carries more than 400 A you need a larger braid or parallel braids, not this one.

Use a flexible braid like the STB040A1559 wherever the two ends can move relative to each other: thermal expansion on long bus runs, transformer or breaker vibration, disconnect switch hinges, or where the pads are slightly out of plane. A rigid link is fine only when both ends are fixed and in the same plane. The flat braid construction also flexes in one plane while staying compact against the bus.
