Blackburn FB3D18-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How long is the FB3D18-1 braid, and does that include the lugs?
The FB3D18-1 is the 18 inch length in Blackburn's flexible braid line. Measure the span you need to bridge plus slack for movement before you pick a length - a braid pulled taut defeats the purpose, since the whole point is that it flexes with the equipment.
2) Is the FB3D18-1 a one-hole or two-hole lug braid?
One hole per terminal. That means a single bolt at each end, so it lands on equipment pads and frames drilled for a single fastener. If your bus pad or ground bar is drilled two-hole on standard NEMA spacing, you need a two-hole braid instead - a one-hole lug on a two-hole pad will rotate under torque.
3) What is the Blackburn FB3D18-1 flexible braid used for?
It's a flexible tin-plated copper braid jumper with a lug at each end, used to bond equipment across a joint that moves or vibrates - transformer cases, switchgear doors, generator frames, expansion joints in busway or conduit runs, and equipment ground continuity where a solid conductor would fatigue. The flat, flexible braid construction absorbs movement while carrying fault current.
4) Does the FB3D18-1 come as one piece or in a pack, and are bolts included?
Sold individually, one braid per order, so order a quantity to match the number of connections on the job. Mounting hardware is not part of the assembly - supply your own bolts, nuts, and washers sized to the single hole in each terminal and to what the equipment pad is drilled for.
5) Can I substitute a length of flexible ground cable for a braid like the FB3D18-1?
Not equivalent. Flat braid has a much larger surface area for its cross section and takes repeated flexing without work-hardening, which is why it's specified across vibrating and moving joints. Stranded cable will fatigue and eventually open at the lug barrel in that service. If the connection doesn't move, a standard stranded bonding jumper is fine; if it does, use the braid.
6) Why tin-plated copper instead of bare copper for a bonding braid?
The tin plating on the FB3D18-1 slows oxidation on the braid strands and at the lug face, which keeps contact resistance stable over time and makes it a better choice than bare copper for damp, outdoor, or corrosive locations and for landing on aluminum or plated hardware.
