Blackburn FBD24-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Blackburn FBD24-1 flexible braid used for?
The FBD24-1 is a flat, flexible tin-plated copper braid strap used to bond or ground equipment where the two points move, vibrate, or need to stay electrically continuous across a joint. It's 76.8 kcmil, 24 inches long, with a one-hole terminal at each end for bolting to a lug pad, frame, or busbar.
2) How long is the Blackburn FBD24-1 braid, and what size conductor is it equivalent to?
Twenty-four inches of braid, rated 76.8 kcmil. That cross-section is what decides whether it carries your bonding current, so size the jumper to the kcmil, not to the physical width of the strap. The 24 inch length gives slack for equipment that moves or racks out.
3) Why tin-plated copper instead of bare copper for a bonding braid?
The FBD24-1 braid is tin-plated copper. The plating slows oxidation on the strands and at the bolted terminal face, which matters on outdoor, damp, or aluminum-contact connections where a bare copper braid would corrode and drive up resistance at the joint.
4) Can I use a flexible braid instead of solid cable for a bonding jumper across a vibrating connection?
That's exactly what a flat braid is for. Solid or stranded cable work-hardens and eventually cracks where equipment vibrates, racks out, or thermally expands. The FBD24-1 is a flexible flat braid, so it absorbs that movement while keeping the bond. Use rigid cable where nothing moves and you want the lower cost and easier routing.
5) What mounting hardware do I need for the FBD24-1 braid ends?
The terminals are one-hole pads, so each end takes a single bolt into a tapped pad or through a drilled lug landing. Bolts, nuts, and washers are not part of the braid itself, so pick up the hardware in the size your equipment's ground pad uses.
6) How is the Blackburn FBD24-1 sold, one strap or a pack?
Sold each. One FBD24-1 is a single 24 inch braid with a terminal on each end, so order one per bonding point.
7) Is the Blackburn FBD24-1 made in North America?
Country of origin is listed as United States and Canada, which matters if you're buying against a domestic-preference or Buy American style procurement spec.
