Blackburn GPL3903BU – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size does the Blackburn GPL3903BU ground clamp fit?
The GPL3903BU is sized for 1-1/4 inch through 2 inch pipe, so it covers the usual range of galvanized water pipe and driven pipe electrodes in that band. On anything smaller than 1-1/4 inch or larger than 2 inch you need a different clamp size in the series.
2) What size grounding electrode conductor will the GPL3903BU take?
It accepts 4 AWG through 4/0 AWG conductor. That covers typical grounding electrode conductors up to the 4/0 size used on large services, so one clamp handles a wide span of copper sizes without stocking multiples.
3) Can this ground clamp be buried in soil or set in concrete?
Yes, the GPL3903BU is a direct bury clamp, so it is intended for below grade use on a buried pipe electrode or ground rod connection rather than only for accessible indoor pipe. The bronze construction is what makes it suitable for permanent contact with earth.
4) Is the Blackburn GPL3903BU bronze or cast aluminum?
Bronze. For a direct burial connection that matters, since bronze on copper conductor avoids the dissimilar metal problem you get pairing aluminum bodies with copper underground.
5) How many ground clamps come in a box, and is there a larger case quantity?
The GPL3903BU ships 5 pieces per inner box and 25 pieces per case, which is worth knowing if you are grounding a run of services or a multi-building site and want to order by the case rather than singles.
6) Is the GPL3903BU an insulated clamp?
No, it is a bare bronze clamp with no insulation on the body. It makes a direct metal to metal bond between the conductor and the pipe, which is what a grounding electrode connection is supposed to do.
