Greenlee RS438W-100 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Greenlee RS438W-100 a complete fish tape with a reel, or just the tape?
Tape only. The RS438W-100 is a replacement steel fish tape, 1/4 inch wide by 100 feet long, meant to be installed into a compatible fish tape reel or case you already own. If you don't have a reel to re-tape, you need a complete fish tape unit instead of this one.
2) What is the Greenlee MagnumPRO 1/4 inch fish tape made of, and will it kink on long conduit runs?
It's oil-tempered spring steel, which is what gives the tape the stiffness to push a long run and the memory to resist kinking and metal fatigue over repeated pulls. Steel construction also means it will push through bends where a fiberglass rod would bind, but it is conductive, so keep it out of energized panels and raceways.
3) Is 100 feet of 1/4 inch steel tape enough for a commercial conduit run?
The RS438W-100 gives 100 feet of reach, which covers most branch-circuit conduit runs, wall cavities and ceiling spaces on commercial and industrial work. For longer home runs you'd need a longer tape; the 1/4 inch width is the heavier of the common steel tape widths, so it pushes well on long runs but takes more room in tight conduit with existing conductors already in it.
4) What is the exact part number to order the 1/4 inch by 100 foot Greenlee replacement steel fish tape?
Order Greenlee MPN RS438W-100 from the MagnumPRO series. It is sold in the single 1/4 inch size, so there's no width or length option to specify.
5) What does the dirt-free finish on the Greenlee replacement fish tape actually do?
It's a coating on the tape that keeps grime off your hands as you feed and retrieve it. Practically, that means better grip on the tape when you're pushing a 100 foot run by hand, and less black residue transferred onto finished walls and ceilings on a renovation job.
6) Where is the Greenlee RS438W-100 fish tape made?
Made in the United States. That matters on public and institutional jobs where domestic-sourced material is a procurement condition, so it's a usable line item for government, school and healthcare MRO orders.
