1) What size wire is the Metallics PT4012 ground pigtail, and where does it get used?
The Metallics PT4012 is a 12 inch ground pigtail made from #12 AWG solid insulated copper. It is used for equipment grounding jumpers at receptacles, switches, junction and outlet boxes, panel and sub-panel ground bars, motor and HVAC equipment ground points, and bonding connections on metallic conduit and raceway.
2) Can I use a #12 ground pigtail on a 20 amp branch circuit?
The PT4012 pigtail is #12 AWG copper, which is the equipment grounding conductor size normally used with 15 and 20 amp branch circuits wired in #14 or #12 copper. On a larger circuit the EGC has to be sized to the overcurrent device, so a #12 jumper would be undersized there.
3) Is this ground pigtail solid or stranded wire?
Solid. The PT4012 has a solid copper core rather than stranded, which holds consistent contact pressure under a screw or lug and resists loosening from vibration. If your termination calls for stranded, such as certain lug and crimp connections that are marked for stranded only, this is not the right jumper.
4) Is the wire on the Metallics PT4012 bare or insulated?
It is insulated, not bare. That matters where a bare jumper could contact an ungrounded terminal inside a crowded device box or panel gutter. Both ends still have to be stripped in the field before you land them on the ground bar and the equipment ground point.
5) Does the Metallics PT4012 pigtail come with a wire nut or a ground screw?
The PT4012 is the copper jumper only. The connector you terminate with, whether that is a wire nut, a green grounding wire connector, a 10-32 ground screw for the box, or a lug at the ground bar, is ordered separately.
6) Do I still have to cut ground pigtails to length with the PT4012?
No. The PT4012 ships pre-cut at 12 inches, so crews rough in the same jumper length on every box instead of cutting scrap off a roll. For a 4 inch square box with a mud ring you will typically fold some of that length back into the box.
