Halo TLS3RBN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the HALO HL3 3 inch square trim a complete light fixture, or do I need the housing and LED module separately?
The HL3 square directional is a recessed trim, not a full fixture. It's the visible aperture and flange assembly that drops into a recessed 3 inch HL3 housing/light engine, which is ordered separately. If you're pricing a job, count one trim per opening plus the matching 3 inch HL3 housing and module for each.
2) What is the difference between the square pinhole and square reflector versions of the HALO HL3 trim?
Two different looks and two different jobs. The square pinhole has a 2 inch aperture that buries the light source deep behind a small opening, so you get a very controlled, low-glare pin of light for accent, gallery and display work. The square reflector uses an open reflector cone for broader, general room illumination. Pinhole is offered in matte black flange with black oculus, matte white with black oculus, matte white with white oculus, and oil rubbed bronze with black oculus. Reflector comes in brushed nickel, matte black, matte white, oil rubbed bronze, and semi-specular clear with matte white flange.
3) Can I change the beam angle on the HALO HL3 downlight after it's installed in the ceiling?
Yes. The HL3 uses field interchangeable optics in 15, 25, 40 and 55 degrees, so you swap the optic instead of pulling and replacing the fixture. That matters on retail and gallery ceilings where the merchandise or artwork moves: start at 40 or 55 degrees for general wash, drop to 15 or 25 degrees when you need a tight accent on a display. Spec the housings once and tune the beams later.
4) What is the difference between the self-flanged and rimless HALO HL3 square trims?
Self-flanged trims have a visible square flange that overlaps the ceiling cut, which hides a ragged or slightly oversized hole and is the forgiving choice on remodel and drywall retrofit work. Rimless sits flush with no visible trim ring for a clean architectural ceiling, but it needs a precise cut and drywall mud work around the aperture. Rimless is offered in matte white, in both pinhole (TLS3PINMWWBRL) and reflector (TLS3RMWRL); the other finishes are self-flanged.
5) Can the HALO HL3 3 inch recessed trim be used on a covered porch or soffit?
Yes, the HL3 square directional is rated for indoor and outdoor installation locations, so covered exterior soffits, porch ceilings and entry canopies are in scope alongside interior work. Matte black and oil rubbed bronze are the finishes that typically hold up best visually against a stained or dark soffit; matte white reads cleanest on a painted one.
6) Will the HALO HL3 downlight run on 277V commercial building power?
The HL3 is rated 120-277V, so it runs on standard 120V residential circuits and on 277V commercial lighting branch circuits without a separate part number. For a mixed portfolio (office floors on 277V, tenant amenity spaces on 120V) you can standardize on one trim and one housing family across both.
7) Does the HALO HL3 3 inch trim qualify as ARRA / Buy American compliant for a government job?
No. The HL3 square directional trim is not ARRA compliant. If your project carries a Buy American or ARRA procurement requirement, this trim will not satisfy it and you'll need to source a compliant recessed trim line instead. Worth settling before the submittal goes in, not after the fixtures land.
8) I need to match a black ceiling detail - which HALO HL3 trim hides the aperture best?
For a dark ceiling, the matte black flange with black oculus pinhole (TLS3PINMBBB) disappears almost entirely, since both the visible flange and the inner cone are black. If the ceiling is white but you want the aperture to read as a dark, non-glaring hole, take the matte white flange with black oculus (TLS3PINMWBB), the flange blends with the ceiling and the black interior kills the bright ring. Matte white flange with white oculus (TLS3PINMWWB) is the choice when you want the whole assembly to vanish into a white ceiling.
9) What finishes does the HALO HL3 square reflector trim come in for matching existing hardware in a building?
Square reflector is available in matte white (TLS3RMW), matte black (TLS3RMB), brushed nickel (TLS3RBN), oil rubbed bronze (TLS3RORB), and semi-specular clear with a matte white flange (TLS3RHWF), plus matte white in rimless (TLS3RMWRL). Brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze are the two that let you carry a lighting finish through to door hardware and plumbing trim in the same space. The semi-specular clear cone is the higher-output choice, the reflective interior throws more light down than a painted cone.
10) Can I aim the HALO HL3 square trim at a wall or artwork, or does it only point straight down?
It's a directional trim, so the inner optic adjusts to throw light off-axis rather than firing only straight down. Pair that with the tight 15 or 25 degree optics and you can graze a wall, hit a piece of art, or wash a merchandise display from a recessed ceiling position. The square flange also lets you line the aperture up square with a wall or a millwork run, which a round trim can't do.
11) Do I have to replace the whole fixture when the LED burns out on the HALO HL3?
No lamp to stock. The HL3 is a fixture-style LED, the light source is integral to the module rather than a screw-in bulb, so there's no relamping cycle and no lamp SKU to carry in the storeroom. For an MRO storeroom that's one fewer consumable line; the tradeoff is that a failed unit is a module swap, not a bulb swap.
