1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon 2RBS14X butt splice accept?
The 2RBS14X takes 16 to 14 AWG stranded copper conductors, one wire into each end. It is the blue-coded size in the heat shrink butt splice range, which is the standard color code for 16-14 AWG terminals, so if your existing crimps on that circuit are blue you are in the right size band. For 22-18 AWG you need a red splice and for 12-10 AWG a yellow one.
2) Is a heat shrink butt splice worth using instead of a plain nylon or vinyl butt connector?
Use the heat shrink type where the joint sees moisture, washdown, vibration or outdoor exposure. The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductors only. Aluminum wire needs a connector specifically marked AL or AL9CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound; putting aluminum into a copper-only crimp barrel creates a galvanic joint that will loosen and heat over time.
6) Will the 2RBS14X splice work on solid conductors, or stranded only?
Barrel crimp splices like this are intended for stranded conductors, which is what 16-14 AWG fixture wire, control wire and appliance cord use. On solid wire a crimp barrel does not deform around the conductor reliably, so for solid 14 AWG branch circuit wire in a box use a twist-on wire connector or an in-line splice rated for solid.
