HES 1006 630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HES 1006 electric strike work with the lock I already have in the door?
If the lock was designed to work within an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike plate, the 1006 accommodates it. That covers cylindrical latchbolt locks and mortise latchbolt locks, and deadbolts up to 1 inch. The strike body is universal and non-handed; what makes it fit your specific lock is the faceplate, and there are 27 interchangeable faceplate options covering deadlatch-above, deadlatch-below, center-lined bolt, night-latch deadbolt, hookbolt and unit lock configurations by brand. So the order question is not whether the strike fits your lock, it is which faceplate letter you specify with it.
2) Which HES 1006 faceplate do I order for a Sargent 8200 or a Schlage mortise lock?
Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200 have the deadlatch below the latchbolt, so they take the KM faceplate. Schlage mortise locks sit in the deadlatch-above group and take KD, alongside Jackson, Sargent 7700 and 8100, and Yale 8700. Two variations change the letter: if the deadbolt on that lock is used as a night latch only, order NM for the Sargent 7800/8200/9200 group and ND for the Sargent 7700/8100 and Yale 8700 group. If the lock has a full 1 inch deadbolt and you want the strike to stay locked while it is thrown, order HM or HD respectively. All of these are the 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ANSI plate for metal frames.
3) Can the HES 1006 be used with a standard cylindrical lever or knob lock?
Yes, with the J faceplate. J covers cylindrical locksets up to a 3/4 inch latchbolt throw and any lockset with a center-lined bolt, in a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ANSI plate. In a wood frame the same job is done by J2, a 9 x 1-3/8 inch plate. Nothing else about the strike changes: the body is the same universal 1006, non-handed, dual 12/24VDC. If your cylindrical latch throws more than 3/4 inch, J is the wrong plate for it.
4) Should I order the 1006 fail secure or the 1006F fail safe?
Fail secure is the standard 1006 build and it is what most openings take: lose power and the strike stays locked. It is also the only version that carries the UL 10C fire label and the published 2,500 lb static and 350 ft-lb dynamic strength figures. Order the 1006F fail safe only where the opening has to unlock on power loss, typically a stairwell or an egress path released by the fire alarm. Bear in mind a fail safe strike is energized to stay locked, so it is drawing its 0.45 A at 12VDC (0.25 A at 24VDC) around the clock, and it cannot go on a fire-rated door.
5) Can I install a 1006 electric strike on a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes, in the fail secure configuration. The 1006 is UL 10C fire rated to 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a double door, and that rating covers fail secure models only. It is also conformant to CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 for fire doors. The fail safe 1006F releases on power loss, so it is outside the fire label and should not be specified on a rated opening.
6) What frame cutout does the HES 1006 strike need, and will it drop into my existing strike prep?
The faceplate follows the ANSI 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch strike plate footprint, so the visible plate lines up with a standard ANSI prep. The body behind it is what governs the cut: 1-11/16 inches wide and 2-1/16 inches deep, so the frame needs a pocket to that depth. On hollow metal, the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit lays out and cuts the prep. Where the old opening is oversized or chewed up, the trim enhancer ships with the strike, with the 1006-105 as the black version, and the 1000-104 lip extension trim adapter and 1006-109 trim adapter handle frames where the plate does not land clean.
7) Can a 1006 electric strike go into a wood door frame?
Yes. The 1006 is rated for metal and wood frames, but a wood frame install uses the longer 9 x 1-3/8 inch faceplates instead of the 4-7/8 inch ANSI plate. The wood-frame set is J2 for cylindrical locks up to 3/4 inch throw, K2 for mortise locks with the deadlatch above the latchbolt, KM-2 for deadlatch below, N-2 where the deadbolt is a night latch only, T-2 for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with a center-lined deadlatch, A-2 for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with no deadlatch, and H-2 where the strike must stay locked with the deadbolt thrown. Specify the 9 inch plate at the time of order; the strike body is the same one.
8) What power supply does the HES 1006 need, and can I run it off an AC transformer?
It is a DC strike: 12 or 24VDC, continuous duty, drawing 0.45 A at 12VDC or 0.25 A at 24VDC. The same body takes either voltage, so there is no voltage to pick when ordering. HES calls for the DC to be well filtered with ripple under 1 volt RMS, which rules out feeding it raw from an AC transformer. If your source is AC, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier converts it at the strike. The 2005M3 SMART Pac III plugs in as well, and the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter handles ElectroLynx harness connections. Field wiring lands on a plug-in connector rather than a splice.
9) I have Best mortise locks. Which 1006 faceplate matches them?
Best splits by series, and this is where installers pick wrong. The KM faceplate lists Best for deadlatch-below applications, with the qualifier that the 45H and 47H have the deadlatch below the latchbolt while the 34H through 37H have it above, so identify the series in the door first. Where the deadbolt is used for night latching only, NM covers Best 45H, 47H and 34H through 37H. Where the lock has a 1 inch deadbolt and the strike must stay locked while it is thrown, HM covers the same Best range. In a wood frame, KM-2 is the deadlatch-below plate that also lists Best.
10) Does the HES 1006 work with an Adams Rite hookbolt lock or with unit and mono locks?
Both, with the right plate. Hookbolts up to a 1 inch throw, Adams Rite included, take the R faceplate. Unit and mono locks, including Unican, Sargent and Corbin-Russwin, take the Z faceplate. Both are the 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ANSI size, so the frame prep is no different from the cylindrical or mortise versions. If the hookbolt throws more than 1 inch, R is not the plate for it.
11) What is the difference between the LBM and LBSM options on the HES 1006?
Both add a monitoring switch inside the 1006 strike body so an access control panel can see the door actually secured rather than just assuming it. LBM is the latchbolt monitor. LBSM is the latchbolt strike monitor. The third choice is the plain universal strike body with no switch at all. One thing that trips people on the order: HES notes the monitor switches may not work with every one of the 27 faceplate options, so settle the faceplate your lock requires first, then confirm the monitor pairs with it. The switch is factory built into the body, so it is a variant to order, not a field add-on.
12) Can the HES 1006 electric strike be used on an exterior door?
Yes. The 1006 is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and rated suitable for outdoor use, with a stainless steel body and tamper resistant construction. For an opening taking direct weather, add the 1000-102 rain guard. Coastal work is covered too: it is ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listed and Florida Building Code approved, which is what a high-velocity hurricane zone submittal will be looking for.
13) Does the HES 1006 meet a Grade 1 spec for an institutional or government job?
The 1006 is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. Alongside that it carries UL 294 listing for access control system components, UL 1034 burglary resistance, UL 10C fire rating in fail secure, CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformance, ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listing and Florida Building Code approval. It is a commercial-duty product, not a residential one. 14) The latchbolt does not line up with the strike opening in my frame. Can the 1006 be adjusted?
Horizontally, yes. The 1006 comes with full keeper shims for horizontal adjustment, so you can take up the gap between latchbolt and keeper without recutting the frame; spare sets are the 1006-103 accessory. For the cosmetic side, a trim enhancer is included in the box (the 1006-105 is the black one) to cover an oversized or damaged opening, and the 1000-104 lip extension trim adapter and 1006-109 trim adapter deal with frames where the plate does not sit flush. A 1000-130 KD filler plate and 1000-110 replacement strike plate are available separately.
15) Is the HES 1006 handed, and what do I actually have to specify when I order one?
Non-handed, so there is no left or right to call out and one part number covers both hands of a pair. Voltage is not a decision either, since the body is dual 12/24VDC. What you do specify is four things: fail safe or fail secure, the faceplate letter that matches your lock and frame material, the finish, and whether you want latchbolt monitoring (LBM, LBSM, or strike body only). 16) Is the 1006 strike heavy duty enough for a main building entrance that gets used all day?
