HES 1500C 630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HES 1500C electric strike release if the door is under pressure from wind, stack effect, or a heavy closer?
No, and this is the first thing to check. The 1500 Series is not preload capable, so the latchbolt cannot be pressed sideways into the keeper when you energize it. Stairwell stack pressure, a badly adjusted closer, a warped slab, or a door hung out of square will all hold the keeper and stop it releasing. Openings like that need a strike specifically listed as preload capable. Where the door closes free and hangs true, the 1500 handles serious abuse: 1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and 1,000,000 cycles of endurance.
2) Which HES 1500 faceplate do I need for a Sargent 8200 mortise lock versus a Schlage mortise lock?
The faceplate is picked by where the deadlatch sits relative to the latchbolt, not by the brand alone. Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200 have the deadlatch below the latchbolt and take the 1KM, along with Accurate, Arrow, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon 1992 M Series and Yale 8800. Schlage mortise locks run the deadlatch above the latchbolt and take the 1KD, as do Jackson, Sargent 7700 and 8100, and Yale 8700. Baldwin, Marks and PDQ are also deadlatch-above and use the 1K. Cylindrical locksets up to 3/4 inch throw, plus any lockset with a center-lined bolt, use the 1J. Best is split: 45H and 47H are deadlatch below, so 1KM, while 34H through 37H are deadlatch above. All four metal-frame plates are 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches and interchange on the same strike body.
3) Is the HES 1500C approved for use on a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes on a single door, and only when it is set fail-secure. The 1500 Series is UL 10C fire rated for 3 hours on a single door in fail-secure mode, and 1-1/2 hours on a double door. It is also conformant to CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152, and carries a California Fire Marshal listing. Field-selecting it to fail-safe on a fire opening gives up that rating, because the keeper has to stay latched when power drops. If the fire door also has to unlock on alarm, that release has to come from something other than this strike.
4) What power supply does an HES 1500C electric strike need, and can I run it off AC?
Dual voltage, so it takes 12 or 24 volts, AC or DC, with no jumper kit to buy. Current draw is 0.24 amps at 12 V and 0.12 amps at 24 V, so size the supply from whichever rail you are running and count every strike on the circuit. Use DC where you have the choice: on DC the strike is continuous duty, on AC it is intermittent duty only and cannot sit energized. It is PoE friendly and UL 294 listed for access control use, and it lands with ElectroLynx connectors, which saves splicing if the frame is already prewired.
5) I already have HES 4500 strikes in my frames. Can I put a 1500 into that existing prep?

6) Is the HES 1500 electric strike rated for an exterior door in a coastal or high-wind location?
It is built for outside work. The 1500 Series is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, with a stainless steel body. For wind loading it is windstorm resistant to ANSI/SDI 250.13, tested to ANSI-ASTM E330, and Florida Building Code approved under TAS 201, 202 and 203, which is the impact and pressure package specifiers ask for on Florida coastal openings. It is a commercial-duty product, not a residential one.
7) What is the difference between the 1500C, 1500C-LM, 1500C-DLM, 1500C-LMS and 1500C-DLMS?
Monitoring, and nothing else. The plain 1500C Complete Pac has no monitoring outputs. The LM adds a single lock monitor, the DLM adds dual lock monitors, the LMS is a lock monitor plus a strike monitor, and the DLMS is dual lock monitors plus a strike monitor. A lock monitor reports the state of the lock's latchbolt, a strike monitor reports the keeper, so if your access control head end needs to know both that the door relatched and that the strike returned to secure, the LMS or DLMS is the order. Dual monitors are the usual call where a redundant or supervised contact is specified. Lock monitors are also sold separately as the OPT-1LM and OPT-1DLM.
8) Do I have to specify handing when I order an HES 1500 electric strike?
Handing is not a factor. The 1500 Series is non-handed, so the same strike works on a left hand or right hand opening. For anyone maintaining a building or a stocking counter, that plus the field-selectable fail-safe/fail-secure setting and dual 12/24 volt operation means one part number covers a lot of doors, and the variable left to choose is the faceplate that matches the lock in each door.
9) Can the fail-safe / fail-secure setting be changed after the HES 1500 is installed?
It is field selectable on the strike, so an installer can flip it without ordering a different part or sending it back. Practically, that lets one stocked strike serve a fail-secure office door and a fail-safe door on a stairwell or elevator lobby where code requires unlock on power loss. One hard limit: on a UL 10C fire rated opening the 3-hour single door rating applies in fail-secure only, so a fire door stays fail-secure regardless of what the rest of the system does.
10) How much depth do I need behind the jamb to fit a 1500 strike body?
The strike body measures 1-5/8 inches deep and 1-3/4 inches wide, with a 4-7/8 inch faceplate on metal frame applications. Cutting a metal frame for it, order the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit; the 157 Torx screws are the fastener accessory if you want tamper-resistant heads at the plate. If the frame is already prepped for another strike and the opening is tight, note the wood frame plates are longer at 9 inches, which changes what the cutout has to accommodate.
11) Is the HES 1500 strike heavy duty enough for a high-traffic apartment or campus entrance?
It is Grade 1 to ANSI/BHMA A156.31, the top commercial grade for electric strikes, and rated at 1,000,000 cycles of endurance. Strength is 1,500 lbs static and 70 ft-lbs dynamic, which is the number that matters when someone shoulders the door. The body is stainless steel and tamper resistant, and it is UL 294 listed for access control. 12) My jamb gap varies from door to door. Can the 1500 strike be adjusted so the keeper lines up with the latch?
Alignment is built into the product rather than shimmed with washers. The 1500 has a field adjustable integrated shim and integrated adjustability, so the installer can bring the keeper to the latch on an opening where the gap is not exactly what the drawing said. Where the frame lip needs building out to meet the door, the 1500-104-xxx lip extension trim adapter handles it and is ordered in a matching finish. Between that and the interchangeable faceplates, one body covers a run of doors that are not identical.
13) Will an HES 1500 electric strike work with a mortise lock that also has a deadbolt?
Yes. The 1500 Series is specified for locksets with or without a deadbolt, and it works with both cylindrical and mortise latchbolt locks. Understand what it is releasing, though: it is a latchbolt strike, so it lets the latchbolt out of the keeper on an access control release. A deadbolt that has been physically thrown is not released by the strike, and someone still has to retract it. On doors where the deadbolt gets thrown at night, that is a procedural issue to sort out before you wire the opening to a card reader.
14) If the solenoid on an HES 1500 strike burns out, does the whole unit have to come out of the frame?
Components on the 1500 are field replaceable, and HES sells them individually: MOD-1SOL is the solenoid replacement module and OPT-1SRK is the spring replacement kit. Monitoring can also be added after the fact with the OPT-1LM single lock monitor or OPT-1DLM dual lock monitors, so an opening that later gets tied into an access control head end does not need a new strike. For a maintenance department running dozens of these, that is the difference between a parts order and a re-prep.
15) Will the exposed parts of an HES 1500 strike match the rest of the hardware on the opening?
Everything a tenant can see is finished, not just the plate: the faceplate, keeper, case and trim all come fully finished on the 1500.
