HES 157D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the HES 157D bit actually do, and do I need it for HES electric strike screws?
The HES 157D is a tamper-resistant Torx R20 insert bit. It drives the tamper-resistant Torx screws used on HES electric strike faceplates, including the HES 157 Torx screw set. A standard Torx driver will not seat properly in a tamper-resistant R20 screw because of the center pin, so if your strike is secured with those screws, this bit is the tool that removes and installs them.
2) Is the HES 157D a complete screwdriver or just the bit?
It is an insert bit only, not a finished driver. You supply the 1/4 inch bit holder, driver handle, or power tool chuck. Order the HES 157 Torx screws separately if you also need replacement fasteners; the 157D is the driving tool, not hardware.
3) I'm stocking a service van for commercial electric strike work. Is this bit worth carrying?
Yes, if you service HES strikes. The 157D is a commercial-duty installation accessory in the HES electric strike accessory line, and tamper-resistant Torx faceplate screws are common on those strikes. Without the matching R20 bit you cannot open the strike at all in the field.
4) What other HES electric strike accessories should I order alongside the 157D bit?
Common companions on an HES strike job: HES 157 Torx screws for replacing the tamper-resistant fasteners themselves, HES SMB surface mounting box, HES 150 stainless edge cover that goes on the door edge over the lock and strike (626 finish only), and HES 152 for mounting inside hollow metal, wood, or aluminum jambs. For jamb prep, the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit covers the 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000, and 7501 strikes in 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations, and the 9000-MTK is the metal template install kit.
5) Is the HES 157D bit an electrical or electronic component?
No. It is a hand tool bit with no wiring or power requirement, even though it belongs to the HES electric strike accessory line. If you need power-side accessories, the HES 2001-1 converts AC to unfiltered DC at 35 V 2 Amp, the 2001M does the same at 35 V 1 Amp with a MOV and self-resettable fuse (neither is recommended for the 1006 strike), and the 2004M adapts existing HES strikes to ElectroLynx connectors.
6) Will the HES 157D work on a Folger Adam 300 Series strike?
The HES 310-2-3 faceplate for the Folger Adam 300 Series electric strike ships with Torx screws included, in standard 630 finish. Where those screws are the tamper-resistant R20 type, the 157D bit is the driver for them. If the screws in hand are standard Torx without a center pin, a plain Torx driver is what you need.
