HES 8000-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 8000 electric strike work with a cylindrical lockset with a 5/8 inch latchbolt?
Yes, up to 5/8 inch. The HES 8000 is built for cylindrical locksets and takes a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch latchbolt, with the 5/8 inch case requiring a 1/8 inch door gap. If your lock is a mortise lock or an exit device rim latch, this is the wrong strike body.
2) Do I have to cut the frame to install an HES 8000 strike?
No cutting. The 8000 drops into the existing strike prep: pull the old strike plate, set the vertical alignment to the latchbolt centerline, and install. That is the whole point of the concealed body design, and it is why it is a common retrofit choice on occupied buildings where you cannot pull and re-prep a jamb.
3) Can the HES 8000 go into an aluminum storefront jamb, or is it hollow metal only?
All three. The 8000 is applied to metal, wood, and aluminum frames, and the faceplate you order is what adapts it: 801 for ANSI metal jambs, 801A and 802 and 803 for aluminum frames, 805 with four point mounting for wood, and 801E with an extended lip for knock-down frames.
4) Does an HES 8000 strike body come with a faceplate, or do I order that separately?
Body only means body only. You order the faceplate to match the frame and the prep you are going into: 801 at 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, 801A same size with radius corners and a flat face plus universal mounting tabs, 801E with the extended lip, 802 at 7-15/16 x 1-7/16, 803 at 6-7/8 x 1-1/4, or 805 at 9 x 1-3/8. All six take latchbolts up to 5/8 inch. If you would rather not spec the pieces individually, the 8000 Complete Pac bundles the solution, though the Complete Pac is 630 satin stainless only.
5) Is the HES 8000 fail safe or fail secure, and can I change it in the field?
Field selectable, both ways. You set fail safe (unlocked on power loss) or fail secure (stays locked on power loss) at install, so one part number covers both. On an egress-critical opening your local code usually drives that choice, so decide before the door is buttoned up.
6) Is the HES 8000 strong enough for a high traffic commercial entry?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.31, with 1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and 500,000 cycles of endurance. It is also UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and UL 294 listed, and rated for outdoor use. That covers apartment entries, school corridors, and back-of-house doors that get slammed all day.
7) My door sags and the latch does not line up with the strike. Will an HES 8000 still work?
That is what the vertical adjustability is for. The 8000 body is shimmed vertically so you can bring the keeper up or down to the latchbolt centerline and take up door sag or frame misalignment without re-prepping anything. It will not fix a horizontal gap problem, though, and at a 5/8 inch latchbolt you need the 1/8 inch door gap.
8) Will an HES 8000 release under door pressure from a closer or stack pressure?
Not a preload strike. If the opening puts side load on the latch, from a heavy closer, a stair pressurization system, or wind on an exterior door, the 8000 is not the part to specify. Look at a strike specifically rated to release under preload for that condition.
9) What electric strike should I use instead of the HES 8000 on a fire-rated door?
The HES 8000 carries a fire rating of No, so for a labeled opening choose a strike built for it. The Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 electric strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24 VDC dual voltage and field reversible fail safe/secure operation, which keeps both the cylindrical lock compatibility and the field-selectable behavior of the 8000. The Adams Rite 7240 is another route, a fire-rated electric strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection, matching the 1/2 to 5/8 inch cylindrical latchbolt range the HES 8000 accommodates.
10) What is the closest equivalent to the HES 8000 electric strike from another manufacturer?
The Von Duprin 4211 is the nearest match. It is an electric strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable operation and is Grade 1 heavy duty. The HES 8000 is likewise a Grade 1 electric strike for cylindrical locksets running 12/24 VDC with field selectable fail safe/fail secure operation. The one difference that decides the job is fire rating: the Von Duprin 4211 is fire rated, and the HES 8000 is not, so on a fire-rated opening the 4211 is the one to specify.
11) Which electric strikes look like a substitute for the HES 8000 but will not work with a cylindrical lockset?
Several strikes in the same size class serve a different latch entirely. The Securitron MUNL is a Mortise UnLatch strike, and the Von Duprin 6210 is built for mortise locks. The SDC 30-4 is a rim mount strike for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt, and the Hager 2945 is a rim exit strike, both intended for exit device latches rather than a lockset latchbolt. The HES 8000 is a cylindrical lock strike taking a 1/2 to 5/8 inch latchbolt, so none of those four drop into the same opening. If you need one body to cover both lock styles, the Von Duprin 6400 is a modular Grade 1 strike for mortise or cylindrical locks.
12) What strike should I use if my access control power supply is AC rather than DC?
The HES 8000 draws .24 amps at 12 VDC/VAC and .12 amps at 24 VDC/VAC, but it is DC continuous duty and AC intermittent duty only, so on an AC supply it is not suited to a door that stays energized. The Trine 004 runs 8-16VAC fail secure with a 6-1/4 x 1-3/8 inch faceplate and takes up to 5/8 inch throw, and the Trine 2001 runs 16-24VAC/DC fail secure with a 5-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch faceplate, also up to 5/8 inch. Both are fire rated. Note that both Trine units are fail secure, where the HES 8000 is field selectable.
13) What voltage and current does the HES 8000 electric strike draw?
12/24 VDC operation, and it runs on AC as well: .24 amps at 12 VDC/VAC and .12 amps at 24 VDC/VAC. DC is continuous duty; AC is intermittent duty only, so do not hold it energized on AC. Size the power supply from the 24 volt figure if you are running several strikes off one supply.
14) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering an HES 8000 strike?
No. The 8000 is non-handed, so one body covers left and right hand openings. Handy if you are stocking spares for a portfolio of doors rather than buying one at a time.
15) Can I get latch monitoring or a door position signal out of an HES 8000?
Latchbolt monitoring is available as the LBM option, ordered with the strike rather than added later. It reports whether the latch is actually seated in the keeper, which is what an access control head end wants to see before it calls a door secure. If you need dual monitoring instead, the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a Grade 1 dual monitor strike.
16) What accessories do I need to run an HES 8000 off an AC transformer or an access control panel?
The 8000 uses a plug-in connector, and the plug-in accessories go with it: the 2001M bridge rectifier if you are feeding it from AC, the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter for connectorized power transfer, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, and the 2006M plug-in buzzer for an audible release cue at a lobby door. Remember AC is intermittent duty only on this strike.
17) Can an HES 8000 be used on an exterior door or a gate?
Exterior doors, yes. The 8000 is outdoor rated and its UL 1034 burglary-resistant listing covers outdoor use. It is not windstorm rated, so it is not the part for a hurricane-rated opening. For a gate specifically, the Camden CX-ED1959 series is the outdoor rated gate strike.
18) Is there a simpler electric strike than the HES 8000 for a light duty interior door?
Yes. The SDC 15 Series is a value electric strike with 5/8 inch latchbolt capacity and 12/24 VDC operation, the same voltage and latchbolt range the HES 8000 covers. The SDC 25 Series is a value strike for 1/2 inch latchbolt compatibility. The Trine 001 Series is a fail-secure light commercial strike with a 5-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch faceplate; note it is fail-secure only, where the HES 8000 is field selectable fail safe or fail secure, so pick the Trine 001 only where the door stays locked on power loss.
19) Is there an electric strike with the same no-cut retrofit approach as the HES 8000?
The Locknetics NC450 is a No Cut electric strike, taking the same approach the HES 8000 uses: remove the existing strike plate, set the vertical alignment to the latchbolt centerline and install, with no cutting on the frame required. The Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated universal low profile strike shipped with four faceplates, which is a different way to solve the same retrofit problem, covering multiple frame preps out of one box. The HES 8000 handles alignment with a vertically adjustable body to take up door sag and misalignment.
20) I need latchbolt monitoring on the strike. What are my options besides adding LBM to the HES 8000?
On the HES 8000 the latchbolt monitor is an optional feature ordered as LBM. If you would rather have the sensing built into the strike as ordered, the Dortronics 3300 Series is an electric strike with a latch bolt sensing switch running 12/24 VDC on a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ANSI prep strike plate, which matches the HES 8000 voltage and the 4-7/8 inch faceplate size. The Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure and a latchbolt monitor, and the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a fire rated dual monitor Grade 1 strike supplied with eight faceplates.
21) What other Grade 1 heavy duty electric strikes compare to the HES 8000 for a high traffic entrance?
The HES 8000 is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 with 1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength and 500,000 cycle endurance. Among peers at the same grade, the Alarm Controls AES-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electric strike, the Von Duprin 4211 is Grade 1 heavy duty and fire rated, and the Von Duprin 6400 is a Grade 1 heavy duty modular strike with a 3-hour UL 10C fire rating in fail-secure. The Locknetics MDS100 and MS100 are also heavy duty strikes. For a labeled entrance the Von Duprin units carry the fire rating; for an unlabeled high traffic door the HES 8000 stays in the running.
22) Can I use the HES 8000 on a pair of doors, and what is the alternative?
The HES 8000 is a strike for cylindrical locksets taking a 1/2 to 5/8 inch latchbolt, mounted in the jamb. For a double door application, the Rockwood electric strike for double doors uses a 3/4 keeper and is a fire rated Grade 1 unit in the 310-1 Series, which is the configuration to specify when the strike has to serve a pair rather than a single leaf in a frame.
23) Which electric strikes give me field reversible fail safe and fail secure like the HES 8000?
The HES 8000 is field selectable between fail safe and fail secure, so one part number covers both a fail-locked and a fail-unlocked opening. The Hager 2925 offers field reversible fail safe/secure operation and takes a 5/8 inch latch, matching the top of the HES 8000 latchbolt range. The Hager 2928 is a second field reversible option. The Camden CX-ED1410 and CX-ED1420 are universal Grade 1 ANSI fire-rated strikes if the opening is labeled. By contrast, the RCI 15BS is an economy strike with fail-secure operation for a special offset latch entry, so it does not give you the choice in the field.
24) What finishes does the HES 8000 electric strike come in?
Seven: 630 satin stainless steel, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 bronze toned, 629 bright stainless steel, and BLK black. The 630 satin stainless is the workhorse in commercial buildings and the one to pick if you are standardizing a facility, since it is also the only finish the 8000 Complete Pac is offered in. The strike itself is stainless steel.
25) Is the HES 8000 a residential product or a commercial one?
Commercial. It is a Grade 1 strike built around 500,000 cycles and a tamper resistant, concealed keeper pin body, which is more strike than a house needs and about right for an apartment entry, a tenant suite door, or an institutional corridor.
