Klein Tools 56406 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How long is the Klein 56406 fish rod, and can I join it to other rods for a longer run?
It is a single 6 foot (1.8 m) rod with stainless steel connectors on the ends, so it couples to other rods in the same Klein Hi-Flex glow rod system to build out a longer push. Each end also has a bullet nose for attaching wire to fish back.
2) Can I use the Klein 56406 glow rod on live circuits or near energized panels?
No. Klein states plainly never to use this rod on or near electrical circuits, despite the fiberglass body. Treat it as a fishing tool only, de-energize before fishing near gear, and keep a safe work position so you do not lose balance while pushing.
3) Does the glow coating on the Klein 56406 actually help in a dark ceiling or crawl space?
The rod is luminescent, so after exposure to light it glows and stays visible above a drop ceiling, behind a wall, or in an unlit crawl space. That is the practical difference from a plain fiberglass rod: you can see where the tip ended up without a second person holding a flashlight.
4) Will I get fiberglass splinters handling this fish rod bare-handed?
The 56406 carries Klein's Splinter Guard coating over the fiberglass specifically to keep hands clear of fiberglass splinters, which is the usual complaint with uncoated rods. Eye protection is still called for when pushing or snapping a rod.
5) How much does the Klein 56406 weigh for a service van or tool bag?
3.2 oz (91 g) for the 6 foot rod, so a set of several adds almost nothing to a bag. It stores at 72 inches long, which means it will not fit a standard tool box or bucket upright; most techs run them in a rod tube or along the van shelf.
6) Is the Klein 56406 fish rod made in the USA?
Yes, the 56406 Hi-Flex glow rod is made in the USA, which matters on jobs with domestic sourcing requirements on supplied tooling.
7) What part number do I order for the 6-foot Klein Hi-Flex glow rod?
Order Klein Tools 56406. That is the manufacturer part number for the 6 foot Hi-Flex glow rod with Splinter Guard coating, 5/32 inch diameter, sold as a single rod.
