HID 1391LSSMN – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HID 1391 MicroProx tag work with my existing HID proximity readers?
Yes. The MicroProx Tag runs at 125 kHz and is compatible with all HID proximity readers, so it drops into an existing HID prox system without changing readers. It can also be programmed in any HID proximity format, which means it can be encoded to match the format already in use on your site rather than forcing a new one.
2) Can I stick a MicroProx tag on a metal radio or a metal badge holder?
No. The MicroProx Tag attaches to nonmetallic materials. Metal detunes a 125 kHz prox antenna, so a tag stuck directly to a metal surface is the one mounting case this part is not meant for. Plastic housings, laminated ID cards, and non-metallic fobs or cases are the intended targets.
3) Is the HID MicroProx tag a low frequency or high frequency credential? Will it work on my iCLASS or smart card readers?
Low frequency. The Tag operates at 125 kHz proximity, which is a different technology from 13.56 MHz smart card credentials. It reads on HID proximity readers. If your site runs smart card readers only, this tag will not be read and you need a 13.56 MHz credential instead; on multi-technology readers that include a prox front end, it will work.
4) What is a MicroProx tag actually for, and when would I use one instead of a prox card?
The MicroProx Tag is an adhesive credential about the size of a coin. You use it when the thing that needs to open the door isn't a card: it sticks onto a two-way radio, a phone case, an existing photo ID printed by another system, or a contractor's own badge, turning that item into a working prox credential. Choose a standard prox card instead when you want a printable, badge-clip credential; choose the Tag when you need to add access to something the user already carries.
5) How do I get HID 1391 MicroProx tags encoded, and can I program them myself?
The Tag is RF-programmable, so it is encoded over the air with HID's ProxProgrammer rather than being fixed at the factory. If you own a ProxProgrammer you can encode tags in house, which is how integrators and larger facilities handle adds and re-issues without waiting on a factory order.
6) What does the sequential matching numbering on the 1391LSSMN mean for issuing credentials?
Sequential matching card numbering means the tags arrive in a running number sequence and the number printed externally matches the internal encoded number. For a property manager or MRO buyer that's the difference between being able to audit a credential by reading it and having to present it to a reader to find out who it is. It makes issuing, logging, and revoking tags in a resident or staff database far simpler across a batch.
7) Is this HID tag suitable for a commercial building or is it a residential product?
Commercial. The 1391 MicroProx Tag is a commercial electronic access control credential, used on office, multi-family, healthcare, and institutional prox systems rather than as consumer hardware. It's the same credential class an integrator issues to staff and tenants on an HID reader network.
8) What color are the HID 1391LSSMN MicroProx tags?
Gray is the finish on the 1391LSSMN. It's a single-color part, so a batch ordered for a site will be uniform, which matters if you color-code credential types across a facility and want prox tags to read as one group.
