HID 5365EKP00 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HID MiniProx 5365 fit on a narrow door mullion?
The MiniProx is a mullion mount reader, sized for the narrow face of an aluminum storefront or hollow metal mullion. It measures 6.0 x 1.7 x 1.0 inches (15.2 cm x 4.3 cm x 1.91 cm), so the 1.7 inch dimension is the one that has to sit within your mullion face. Glass front installers use this form factor for exactly that reason: a full size wall reader will overhang a typical storefront stile, and this one does not.
2) Does the HID MiniProx 5365EKP00 work with my access control panel?
It is a Wiegand output reader, which is the standard reader interface on essentially every commercial access panel, so it lands on a normal Wiegand reader port. It reads 125 kHz proximity credentials, so the cards and fobs already issued in your building have to be 125 kHz prox for this reader to read them. A 13.56 MHz smart card population will not work on it.
3) Can I add the MiniProx to existing doors without reissuing cards to my tenants?
If your building already runs 125 kHz proximity credentials, yes, the same cards and fobs work on this reader. It reads 125 kHz prox and outputs Wiegand to your existing panel, so a property manager standardizing more openings onto the same system keeps the credential population as it is. The check to make is the frequency of the cards you already issue, not the brand of the reader they came with.
4) What is an equivalent Wiegand proximity reader if the HID MiniProx 5365EKP00 is not the right fit?
The SDC IPRW Series is a Wiegand proximity reader with 125 kHz HID compatibility, so it works on the same 125 kHz credential frequency and the same Wiegand output the MiniProx 5365EKP00 uses. The MiniProx is a 125 kHz mullion mount reader running on 5-16 VDC with a read range of up to 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) and a body measuring 6.0 x 1.7 x 1.0 inches (15.2 cm x 4.3 cm x 1.91 cm), so if you are matching a narrow mullion or aluminum stile with an existing 18 inch pigtail run, confirm the IPRW body will land on the same mounting face before you swap.
5) How far away will the MiniProx read a proximity card?
Up to 5.5 inches (14.0 cm). That is enough for a card held up to the reader or waved from a lanyard, but it is not a hands-free or in-pocket range. If your users need to badge without taking the credential out, the mullion form factor and this read distance are not the right choice.
6) How does the 18 inch pigtail on the 5365EKP00 get wired at the door?
The reader terminates in an 18 inch pigtail rather than a screw terminal block, so you splice to your reader cable inside the mullion or at a nearby junction. Plan for a splice point within about a foot and a half of the reader location, and pull your Wiegand cable to meet it. Nothing lands directly on the reader body.
7) What is an alternative to the HID MiniProx if I want a different brand of 125 kHz Wiegand reader?
The SDC IPRW Series Wiegand proximity reader is the cross brand option we carry. It is a Wiegand reader with 125 kHz HID compatibility, so it reads the same prox credential population and lands on the same panel reader port. Choose on form factor and mounting, since the MiniProx is specifically a mullion size reader.
8) Do I need a keypad reader instead of the HID MiniProx 5365EKP00?
The MiniProx 5365EKP00 is a proximity card reader only, so every entry is made with a 125 kHz credential presented to the reader face. If your access plan calls for a PIN, or for card-plus-PIN at higher security openings, a card-only reader will not satisfy it and you need a keypad unit at that door. Where the opening is credential-only, the MiniProx covers it with a read range of up to 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) on 5-16 VDC. The SDC IPRW Series is likewise a proximity reader rather than a keypad.
9) Will an SDC IPRW reader work with the same cards as an HID MiniProx 5365EKP00?
Both read at 125 kHz. The MiniProx 5365EKP00 is a 125 kHz proximity card reader, and the SDC IPRW Series is described as a 125 kHz reader with HID compatibility, so a facility already carrying 125 kHz HID proximity credentials is reading the same badge stock at either reader. Both send Wiegand to the panel, so the head-end wiring scheme does not change either; what does change is the physical mount, since the MiniProx is built as a mullion mount unit at 6.0 x 1.7 x 1.0 inches.
10) Is the MiniProx an indoor only reader or can I mount it outside?
MiniProx is a commercial grade access control reader used on exterior storefront and entry mullions as well as interior openings. It comes in black.
